The Oakdale High School Mustangs enjoyed a successful week two of their sports season. Boys tennis, girls golf and cross country all were on the winning side of things this past week.
BOYS TENNIS
The boys tennis team defeated East Union on Thursday, Feb. 25 by a 9-0 decision. The shutout win came in the team’s lone match of the week. Caleb Poling defeated Matthew Trinidad 6-1, 6-0. Jimmy Homer came away with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Kelton D’Souza. Jackson Healy knocked off Daniel Ngo 6-2, 6-3. Aiden Rodrigues won in straight sets over Matthew Mendoza 6-1, 6-1. Ethan Dingu defeated Tristan Santos 6-1, 6-0. Alex Tangle defeated Dom Ochoa 6-1, 6-0 in the final singles contest of the day. In doubles, the team of Joey Jansen and Carson Stueve defeated Landon Wolfe and Ben Potter 6-0, 6-0. Hunter Olsen and Ryan Krause defeated Tito Soto and Bradley Phippen 6-0, 6-0. Jacob Sponsel and Jeremiah Janssen won via forfeit. The next tennis contest for the boys is scheduled for Thursday, March 4 against Ripon at 3:30 p.m. The team is now 2-0 on the season.
GIRLS GOLF
In their opening contest of the season; the girls golf team traveled to Manteca Park Golf Course to take on Sierra. The match took place on Feb. 24. Oakdale won 253-287. Shealyn Hanrahan (42), Tori Blanc (44), Kaylie Parola (47), Makena Mendonca (55), Alivia Antinetti (65) and Kelsey Shatswell (65) took the course for the Lady Mustangs. Tuesday, March 3 the team was scheduled to travel to take on Central Catholic following The Leader’s press time.
CROSS COUNTRY
In all three levels the Oakdale Mustangs defeated visiting Ripon on Thursday, Feb. 25 in cross country. In frosh/soph boys action a trio of sophomores owned the race, all placing in the top three. First place finisher Nathan Luca crossed the finish line at 12:27. Second place finisher Alex Martinez came in at 12:56. Alejandro Felix came in third place at 13:38 in the two-mile race. The boys won 15-45 to go 2-0 on the season. In varsity girls action, Haleigh Humble finished first for the second consecutive week at 12:27. Hannah Beth Norman placed fourth overall at 22:04. Kassidy Fmura placed fifth just behind Norman by a step. Oakdale is now 2-0 following the 25-31 win.
For the varsity boys sophomore Caleb Cavanaugh completed the three-mile race at 16 minutes flat.
“It feels great to be back out here and competing,” said Cavanaugh, who took first place. Second place finisher was Dax Daley at 16:25 and Dominic Robles finished third overall at 16:49. The varsity boys are now 2-0 on the season following their 16-46 win.
“We ran really well today in all three divisions. The girls team beat the 2019 Sac-Joaquin Division IV Section Champions and that is a huge confidence builder,” said coach Guy Fowler. “All the runners know that this year is really different but that is not stopping them from coming out and competing and that is exactly what they did today. We are really pleased with the progress every runner is making.”
Oakdale is off this week but returns to action on March 10 against Escalon at 3 p.m.
