Volleyball boys outlast Pacheco, track team stays busy

With some teams having to battle raindrops, other squads simply battled their opponents.

Plenty of spring sports action was on the schedule for the Oakdale Mustangs; following is a recap of recent contests.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

In a non-conference home match against Pacheco, Oakdale defeated the Panthers 3-2. The marathon showdown took place Thursday night, March 6. Oakdale and the Panthers went to a dramatic five set match. Set one went to Pacheco 25-22. After being tied at 10, Oakdale took a 12-11 lead after Declan Edwards scored. Down 15-14, Lucas Freitas tied it at 15 with a block. Down 21-17 Oakdale took a time out. An Edwards block made it a 22-19 deficit for Oakdale.

In set two Oakdale won 25-22. Down 11-7, Oakdale took a time out. Freitas and Edwards combined for a block on the front line and made it an 11-9 contest. Drew Magina tied it at 13 when he hit the ball over to an empty spot on the floor. Edwards gave Oakdale a 12-11 advantage with a spike. The match would be tied at 18 until Tanner Humphrey gave Oakdale a 19-18 lead when he hit the ball off a Panther. Magina finished the set on an ace.

Set three Oakdale won 25-22. Humphrey gave Oakdale a 6-4 lead on an ace. Down 10-7 Oakdale called a time out. Iker Juarez tapped the ball over the net and between two Panthers to make it an 11-9 contest. Tied at 13 Mortiz Toenjes gave Oakdale a 14-13 lead. Magina’s spike made it a 20-15 Oakdale lead. Magina ended the game with a spike.

The fourth set saw a thrilling 26-24 Panthers victory. A Magina ace gave Oakdale a 7-3 lead. Oakdale went up 15-7 forcing a timeout by the visitors. Another Magina ace made it 20-17. Juarez made it a 21-17 Oakdale lead. Oakdale went up 24-21 but the Panthers ended the set on a 5-0 run to force a fifth set.

Oakdale earned a 15-11 victory in the final set and never trailed in that set.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Friday, March 7 Oakdale High School competed in the Stanislaus County Meet at Hughson High School. The varsity girls finished second overall with a score of 93.5. The boys placed fourth overall with a score of 54.0.

Here are athletes who finished in the top five of their events.

Varsity Boys; 800 Meters - Parker Whitemyer 2:04.44 (5th); 1600 Meters - Parker Whitemyer 4:25.92 (2nd); 1600 Meters - Ismael Dominguez 4:30.20 (4th); 3200 Meters - Ismael Dominguez 9:43.33 (1st); 3200 Meters - Sean Muturi 9:53.81 (3rd); 4x100 Relay - Wes Burford, Caden Adams, Jason Martinho and Landon Tolboe 44.91 (5th); Discus - Kayden Duenas 113’11.5” (4th); High Jump - Noa Concepcion 5’8 (5th); Pole Vault - Grant Gardner 11’0 (4th).

 

BASEBALL

In a three-game series against Mountain House; Oakdale High School varsity baseball scored a total of 52 runs. They outscored the other “Mustangs” 52-12 in the series as Valley Oak League play began. On March 3 the two teams opened the season with Oakdale hitting the road and the OHS Mustangs winning 21-1. Oakdale scored 11 runs in the first inning and had a total of four home runs in the game. Griffin Costa and Landon Schutte each hit one. The other two came off the bat of Eric Velazquez. Pitching for Oakdale were Rowdy Sphar and Landon Schutte. Schutte pitched four innings giving up just two hits and struck out seven. Sphar pitched one inning and gave up one run.

Due to rain, Oakdale and Mountain House played a double header on Friday, March 7. Game one was a 15-6 win for Oakdale. Game two of the day was a 16-5 victory for Oakdale. Four players had two hits in the win. Costa, Bas Stice, Schutte and Evan Criswell each had two hits in the win. Peyton Wallace led the team with four runs batted in. Ayden Ardis added three more runs batted in.

JV: It was a series sweep to begin the season for Oakdale. They defeated Mountain House in all three contests. Game one Oakdale won 14-2, game two they edged them 5-4 and game three was a 12-1 road win.

Freshmen: The youngest Oakdale baseball team swept Mountain House in a two-game series. Oakdale won 15-5 and in game two it was a 14-4 home win.

 

BOYS TENNIS

In their lone match of the week, the Mustang boys tennis team lost 9-0 at Mountain House. While Mountain House is new to the Valley Oak League, they made an instant impact with their win against Oakdale.

Camden Knight lost to Adhyatma Rajan 6-0, 6-1. Jaxton Marler lost to Aprameye Rao 6-3, 6-3. Levi Hensley lost to Sri Kotaprolu 6-0, 6-0. Matthew Yakligian lost to Kenny Nguen 6-3, 6-2. Austin Speiller fell to Sehej Ahuja 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the singles matches, Tristan McCarthy lost to Nikhshep Totamalla 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Max Birchall and Mitchell Benning lost to Kristen Anto and Andy Su 6-1, 6-0 while Gianni Alburo and Brody Lev fell short to Siddhesh Sarvanan and Arshbir Nival 6-1, 6-1. The final set of the evening went to Rakshith Karthik and Sumanth Jayakanth with their win over Oakdale’s Border Rath and Anthony Llona 6-0, 6-0.

Oakdale’s next contest is scheduled for March 18 at Central Catholic at 3 p.m.

 

SWIMMING

On Saturday, March 8 Oakdale High School hosted the annual March Madness swim meet. Over 350 swimmers representing more than a dozen schools from as far north as River City in Sacramento and as far south as Hilmar competed. Here are the OHS swimmers who placed in the top 10 in their events.

Oakdale’s next meet will be home on Friday, March 14 when they welcome Valley Oak League opponent Central Catholic. The meet is currently scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
