It was a successful day for Oakdale High School cross country teams at Frogtown.
This past Saturday, Nov. 3 the Mustangs laced up their running shoes and competed in the CIF Sub-Sections. At the race Oakdale’s varsity girls team had a pair of top five placers and as a team, earned sixth place overall. Junior Kayden Legan placed third overall in the five kilometer race as she completed the course in 19:37.1. Literally a half a step behind her was freshman Haleigh Humble at 19:37.4 to place fourth.
“Kayden and Haleigh ran amazingly against some really good runners,” said head coach Guy Fowler.
Legan surpassed Humble down the final stretch of the race. Earning a top 25 finish for Oakdale was freshman Hannah Beth Norman at 21:03. With a sixth place team finish Oakdale has advanced to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Folsom. Lauren Schickert (24:17) and Kendra Branch (24:52) also competed in the race.
For the boys team, they placed 11th overall and just missed qualifying for the weekend Section Championship. However, two boys did qualify as individuals. Senior Dustin Chavez, who is coming off his impressive Valley Oak League championship run, placed 15th overall at 17:16 in the five kilometer race. Sophomore Tanner Cusano also punched his ticket for the Section Championship this weekend when he placed 37th overall at 18:04. Others who competed in the race included Austin Bruner (19:15); Justin Carlos (19:46) and Stephen Badger (19:48).
“Dustin (Chavez) has had a remarkable season considering it is his first year committed to the sport,” Fowler said. “I am very pleased with the way both teams performed.”
