The Valley Oak League title for cross country was decided on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Diablo Grande Course in Patterson. Oakdale’s varsity girls and boys teams won the championship. The impressive performances continued a long winning streak in league competition for both teams.
For the girls it was their seventh consecutive league championship. They ran three miles and freshman Addison Wylie placed second overall in the race with a time of 18:39. Sophomore Kylie Fast placed fifth overall at 19:14. A few steps later junior Bradie Evans placed sixth overall at 19:19. Senior Ava Calandro finished seventh overall at 19:31. Wylie, Fast, Evans and Calandro were all rewarded with All-VOL Honors. Finishing in the top 15 were sophomore Taylor Reams (ninth place; 19:38); junior Jordan Wylie (12th place; 20:18) and senior Audri Scott (13th place; 20:24).
As for the boys, it was their fourth straight VOL championship. Senior Jacob Cavanaugh finished his three-mile run in 15:23 and was the second place finisher. Senior Ismael Dominguez placed fourth overall at 15:32. Parker Whitemyer finished sixth overall at 15:59. Cavanaugh, Dominguez and Whitemyer all earned All-VOL honors. Four more Mustangs finished in the top 15. Junior Sean Muturi (eighth place; 16:31); sophomore Quinn Baca (11th place; 16:49); sophomore Weston McGhee (12th place; 16:50) and junior Dirk Scott (15th place; 16:58) all earned top 15 finishes.
Oakdale’s frosh/soph girls also took first place. Five runners placed in the top 15. Summer McGinnis finished in fourth place at 14:28. Susanna Orr finished in eighth place at 15:30. Anevay Carlson finished in ninth place with a time of 16:14. Both Jannett Cisneros-Jimenez and Skyler Cavanagh crossed the finish line at 16:46 to take 14th and 15th place, respectively. The girls competed in a two-mile race.
Just missing out on the program sweep, Oakdale’s frosh/soph boys placed second in the Valley Oak League. This was a two-mile run. A pair of freshmen captured first and second place. Roman Moreno finished in first place at 11:28. Daniel Anderson crossed the finish line five seconds later at 11:33 to claim second place. Sophomore Coltyn Renault finished fourth overall at 11:50. Sophomore Shawn Taylor placed 14th at 12:34 and freshman Trevor Powell placed 24th overall at 13:00.
“We performed very well today in all four divisions,” said coach Guy Fowler following the Oct. 30 meet. “We recorded 30 best times today for the season which means that they were ready to compete. Time to go back to work and get ready for the CIF SJS Sub-Section meet.”
Oakdale will compete in the sub section on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Frogtown-Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.
