Oakdale’s basketball players are in tournaments this week, as school is out for the long holiday break.
The boys are hosting the Oakdale Rotary Tournament, Wednesday, Dec. 28 through Friday, Dec. 30 and the varsity is scheduled to take on Johansen with an 8 p.m. tip off on Dec. 28. The JV boys were to open up with a 1:30 p.m. contest Wednesday against Atwater. Outcomes of the first-round games will determine opponents for Thursday’s second round action.
Meanwhile, in preseason play, the varsity boys put together a 52-38 win at home against Ceres on Tuesday, Dec. 20. They had a 25-15 lead at the half and pulled away with a strong 22-point run in the fourth quarter. Jayden Coelho poured in 23 points on the night while Niko Klose added 17 and Tyler Cooley pulled down five rebounds.
The JV boys also got a win on the home court against Ceres, 50-34, on Dec. 20 and followed that up with a tough loss to Riverbank on Dec. 22, falling 39-38.
For the freshmen, they put a pair of wins on the books, trouncing Ceres 61-16 on Dec. 20 and piling up the points with a 53-33 decision over Riverbank on Dec. 22.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
A loss on the road and one at home made it a tough week for the varsity Lady Mustangs on the basketball court.
They traveled to Sonora on Dec. 20 and fell by a 40-19 decision. Hosting Lodi the next day, Dec. 21, the varsity girls started out strong, carrying a 23-20 lead into the half and up 31-27 entering the final frame. But Lodi got hot, outscoring Oakdale 14-4 in the fourth quarter to walk off with a 41-35 win.
The varsity squad was scheduled to play in the Tom Hawkins Tournament this week, opening up with a game on Tuesday, Dec. 27 against Mt. Diablo.
Valley Oak League play for the basketball teams starts once school resumes in January.
