Tournament play for boys, girls basketball squads

Tournament season for hoopsters has been the theme for Oakdale High School basketball programs.

For the girls, Oakdale competed in the 29th Golden Valley High School Lady Cougar Classic. Eight teams participated in the tournament: Merced, Beyer, East Union, Ripon, Oakdale, Gregori, Whitney and host Golden Valley. Oakdale first faced off against Gregori where they lost 50-24. In the consolation bracket Oakdale defeated the host team Golden Valley 39-29. Their tournament run came to an end with a 39-25 loss to Merced.

This week the Oakdale Lady Mustangs will host Central Valley of Ceres on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

The boys team played a non-conference game against Division II Whitney, with the host team defeating Oakdale 67-45 in Rocklin. Sophomore Bryce Busam had 16 points for Oakdale. Senior Jake Norris had 11 points.

Over the weekend Oakdale competed in the Frank Godinez Tournament played at CSUS in Turlock. The Mustangs opened the tournament against Turlock and defeated the Bulldogs 52-50. Noah Zepeda scored 17 points for the Mustangs in the thriller. Busam added 13 points for Oakdale in the win. In the second round Oakdale fell to the Vikings of Johansen 63-60. Oakdale finished the tournament with a 61-30 victory over Patterson.

Oakdale plays at home on Thursday, Dec. 12 against Rio Americano.
