Tigers defeat varsity Lady Mustang hoopsters

Turnovers doomed the Oakdale High School girls varsity basketball team against Patterson. The Valley Oak League game took place on Tuesday night, Jan.21 at Oakdale and it was the visitors who took the 41-23 victory off the court.

Turnovers told the story early in this one as Oakdale committed 11 of them in the first quarter alone, including four in the first two minutes of the game. Natalie Powell scored the team’s first points of the game with 6:18 remaining in the first quarter to go up 2-1. However, the Tigers ended the quarter on a 13-2 run to be up 14-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Audrey Clark connected on a free throw attempt with 4:44 remaining in the half for the team’s first point of the second quarter, down 14-5. Cassidy Clark hit a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit in half, 14-7 with 3:48 remaining in the half. The Tigers clawed back with a 7-0 run to go up 21-7, that was broken up by a Montserrat Garcia free throw with 16.2 seconds left in the half. Oakdale trailed 21-8 at the half.

Garcia scored on a layup for Oakdale’s first points of the third quarter with 6:52 left in the period. Samantha Powell made a basket down low and was fouled for a three-point play opportunity. However, Powell would miss the free throw attempt to make the score 31-14 Patterson with 1:06 left in the third quarter.

With 5:01 remaining in the game, Natalie Powell split a pair of free throw attempts and then scored a basket in the paint, with her team down 39-19 with 2:57 left to play. With 2:18 left in the game, Clark made a pair of free throws to pull within 39-21.

Natalie Powell scored seven points and added six rebounds in the loss. Cassidy Terry had four points and five rebounds and a block for Oakdale.

Two nights later Oakdale traveled to Manteca to face East Union where the Lancers defeated Oakdale 56-17.

The junior varsity girls lost 31-13 to Patterson. Laly Hernandez scored eight points, Olivia Rodrigues scored four points and Deliah Salas added one. Information on the East Union game was not available.

For the freshman girls, it was a win and a loss this past week. They opened up with a 27-21 win over Patterson, with Aniya Banks leading the way with nine points. It was a tougher outing against East Union, falling 34-14.

This week, the girls were to host Manteca on Jan. 28 and host Central Catholic in the final home game of the season on Thursday, Jan. 30.
