With a pair of wins this past week, the varsity Lady Mustangs ran their record to 7-0 during the preseason campaign. Basketball teams were also in action, as the winter sports squads see tournament competition and play non-league games as the calendar year winds down.
GIRLS SOCCER
On Monday, Dec. 12 the varsity girls hosted Bret Harte and built up a 2-0 lead at the half, ultimately shutting out the Bullfrogs 5-0.
Goals came from Mia Peterson, Kyndra Obermeyer, Claire McGhee Brown, Kassandra Hernandez and Kyleigh Melconian. Assists were by Kyndra Obermeyer, Mia Peterson, and Claire McGhee Brown.
Goalkeeper Avery Alves for OHS got a red card and was ejected in the 38th minute of the game, right before halftime. Head coach Kico Monares said the keeper came out of the 18-yard box on a one-on-one and took the Bret Harte player out.
“OHS played with 10 players the remainder of game and still controlled possession of the game and dominated the second half, scoring three goals to get a 5-0 victory,” Monares said.
At Oakdale on Dec. 14, the varsity squad hosted Cesar Chavez and took a 7-1 win, leading 2-0 midway through.
Mia Peterson and Claire McGhee Brown each had two goals, with Kyndra Obermeyer, Kassandra Hernandez, and Peyton Long notching one each. Obermeyer had a pair of assists and also contributing helpers were Jocelyn Gradilla, Gianna Tennis, and Kyra Binstock.
“Had a slow start the first half … struggled to score goals behind a defense that was defending with 11 players,” Monares noted. “Second half, OHS showed what type of team they expect to be this year…speed of play, movement off ball, and attack, attack, attack with numbers. Jocelyn Gradilla led the surge the second half from the outside back role by making runs in the attack and creating goal scoring opportunities.”
The girls are scheduled to travel to Ripon for a non-league game on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
They have outscored their opponents 28-3 in their seven wins and have four shutouts.
