Run to the State Meet for cross country boys

Oakdale’s varsity boys have done it. After months of hard work and preparation, the cross country team has qualified for the CIF State Cross Country championship. This achievement came at Folsom during the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Meet on Saturday, Nov. 16. As a team, Oakdale finished in second place overall in the five-kilometer race. The Mustangs had three top 10 finishers. Senior Ismael Dominguez finished seventh overall with a time of 16:24. Two seconds later fellow senior Jacob Cavanaugh finished the race and placed eighth overall. Junior Parker Whitemyer finished tenth overall at 16:43.

Also, sophomore Quinn Baca placed 26th at 17:22. Rounding out the performance were Weston McGhee placed 29th (17:25), Dirk Scott 30th (17:27) and Sean Muturi 42nd (17:58). This is the fourth straight year that the team will compete in the state finals.

For the varsity girls, it was a fourth-place finish for the team. Freshman Addison Wylie qualified for the State Meet as an individual. She placed sixth overall with a time of 19:37. Sophomore Taylor Reams finished 20th overall with a time of 20:37. Bradie Evans finished with a 26th place finish with a time of 21:21. Kylie Fast finished 28th at 21:28 while Jordan Wylie finished 30th overall at 21:30. Rounding out the day for Oakdale’s varsity girls were Ava Calandro, 37th at 21:51 and Audri Scott at 22:13 for a 44th place finish.

The freshman-sophomore boys finished in fourth place. Oakdale had four runners place in the top 50 in the Divisions 1-5 combined. It was a five-kilometer race. Mitchell Benning placed 20th overall in 18 minutes flat and finishing just behind him was Roman Moreno. Daniel Anderson finished 37th overall at 18:39. Landon Arnold finished 49th at 19:09. Rounding out the effort was Coltyn Renault at 19:32 for 54th; Jesus Covarrubias placed 64th at 19:52 and Shawn Taylor finished 71st at 20:21.

“The kids ran the best that they could for today. These kids have put in a remarkable season and we get the boys team back to state, fourth year in a row,” said coach Guy Fowler. “Addison Wylie as an individual on the girls side is great.”

The CIF State Championship will be held at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 30.
