In a pair of non-Valley Oak League matches, the Oakdale High School varsity girls soccer team took on Linden and Lincoln this past week. It was a 6-0 home win over Linden; however, the Mustangs were handed a 5-0 road loss to Lincoln two days later.
In the home win against the Lions on Monday, Dec. 2 Oakdale scored three first half goals and followed up with three more in the second half. Three goals and an assist by sophomore Dakota Burford helped power Oakdale on the night. Freshman Ceci Cotton found the net for a goal as did Lauren Ghigilia and senior Kyleigh Melconian. Oakdale had an assist by junior Noelani Meza. Sophomore Trinity Thomasser played all 80 minutes between the posts. She had no saves, though, because the Lions did not attempt a shot in the match.
Wednesday night, Dec. 4 the girls gave up three first half goals to the Trojans and Lincoln added two more in the second half. Thomasser had six saves in the match for Oakdale.
Over the weekend Oakdale hosted a tournament. On Friday, Dec. 6 the opening round saw Oakdale earn a 3-1 win over Atwater. Burford scored two goals and Cotton added the other. Shelby Mitchell had two assists. Thomasser had two saves. Later that night, the team defeated Summerville 3-0. Burford and Kaia Cox each had one goal. Freshman Ashlyn Splettstoesser had a goal and an assist in the win. Thomasser had two saves. Saturday morning the girls defeated Turlock 3-2. Burford had two goals and Taylor Lemke added the other. Kassandra Hernandez had an assist. Thomasser had four saves in goal.
In the finale of the tournament, Oakdale took on Lincoln; the same team that beat them earlier in the week. The showdown was played out Saturday evening. The contest ended regulation in a scoreless draw; Lincoln would ultimately prevail in the PK shootout.
Oakdale will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 16 when they host Manteca in the Valley Oak League season opener.
Boys Soccer
With Valley Oak League play beginning for the Mustang boys on Dec. 12, the varsity boys soccer team played a couple preseason matches this past week. It was with mixed results for the Mustangs, as they went 1-1 in the two contests.
Their first match of the week was on Monday, Dec. 2 at Riverbank. The Bruins took a 2-0 lead at the break and the Mustangs fired back with three goals in the second half. However, it was Riverbank who held on for a 5-3 victory. Jason Martinho, a senior, scored two goals for Oakdale and junior Ray Perez also found the net
Wednesday, Dec. 4 the boys hosted longtime rival Sonora. The Wildcats clawed themselves to a 4-1 advantage but Oakdale stormed back with five unanswered goals in the second half to win 6-4. Senior Dylan Krause scored two goals and added an assist. Junior Hudson Ruvalcaba also had a pair of goals and an assist in the win. Freshman Joseph Garcia scored a goal for Oakdale. In the goal for Oakdale were Aiden Vargas and Mitchell Benning. Vargas had two saves and Benning added three saves.
