Oakdale varsity soccer girls win two, boys split contests

It was a busy week on the pitch, as the Oakdale Mustangs varsity boys and girls soccer squads each played a pair of Valley Oak League contests this past week.

For the Lady Mustangs, they came on strong and captured a pair of shutout victories.

On Wednesday, Jan. 17 the girls defeated Central Catholic at home 3-0 and followed that up with a dramatic 1-0 road win over Manteca.

In their win against the Raiders on the home pitch, three different players found the net. Dakota Burford, Monica Luna and Kyleigh Melconian all scored for Oakdale. Assists came from Mia Peterson and Kyra Binstock. Keira McCulley and Avery Alves split time in goal, McCulley with one save and Alves with two.

Mia Peterson put the only goal of the game in the net against Manteca, scoring in the second half. Keeper Avery Alves had four saves.

Oakdale traveled to Kimball to face the Jaguars on Monday, Jan. 22 following The Leader’s sports press time. Their next game will be at home on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m.

 

Mustang Boys

The varsity Mustangs hosted Central Catholic on Tuesday night Jan. 16. In the end, it was the Mustangs walking off the field as victors with a thrilling 5-4 win. A total of seven first half goals were scored by the two teams in the back-and-forth contest.

Dylan Krause led the way for Oakdale with three total goals and Jason Martinho added a pair for the Mustangs. Senior Harold Vanegas had two assists in the game. Landon Tolboe, Jesus Corona and Abraham Isidro each added one assist. Senior goalkeeper Raul Guerrero had four saves in the contest.

Two days later the boys headed to Manteca to face the Buffaloes. Manteca knocked off Oakdale 5-1. The host team outscored Oakdale 2-0 in the first half. Vanegas scored the lone goal for Oakdale. Isidro assisted the goal.

Oakdale is 1-4 in Valley Oak League action and currently in fifth place. This week they were scheduled to take on first place Kimball and then face second place Sierra on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. Thursday’s match will be a home game for the Mustangs.
