As we near the end of the regular season, the Oakdale High School girls soccer team looks to finish on a strong note. This past week the Lady Mustangs (7-8-2, 4-7-0) defeated both Weston Ranch (0-17-2, 0-11-0) and Kimball (13-8-1, 7-3-1). On Monday, Feb. 3 the girls traveled to Stockton to take on Weston Ranch. Oakdale jumped on the Cougars early and often and snapped a three game losing streak and returned home with a 7-0 victory. Ruby Fink led the charge with four goals. Alyssa Stout, Kiara Vigil and Kassy Rodriguez each scored a goal as well. The Mustangs had six assists in the contest, from six different players. Ximena Vigil, Maquel Besson, Jade Manriquez, Kendra Branch, Delilah Perez and Victoria Rojas all finished with an assist. Rojas also started as goalie and had a shutout. Oakdale capped off the season sweep against Weston Ranch.

On Wednesday night, Feb. 5 the girls hosted Kimball. Earlier in the season, Oakdale was blanked by the Jaguars 3-0. The Mustangs succeeded in getting their revenge as they edged the visiting Jaguars with a 2-1 home win. Goals were scored by Besson on a corner kick and Rodriguez had a goal on an assist from Fink.

“Team captain Kendra Branch had a talk with her teammates and asked her teammates to finish her senior season strong, and the girls responded well this week, I am very proud of the team,” said head coach Grace Fernandes.

Oakdale’s final game of the season will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12 at home against Central Catholic (4-10-2, 2-9-0). This will be Senior Night 2020. Along with Branch, there will be seven other seniors that will be honored: Kassy Rodriguez, Sophia Ortiz, Daniela Carranza, Alyssa Stout, Isabel Charbonier, Emily Takaki and Daniela Dela Riva. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. prior to their showdown against the Raiders.

The junior varsity girls also earned a pair of victories this past week. Oakdale defeated Weston Ranch 10-0 and won 4-1 over Kimball. In the win over Kimball, Karina Verduzco had two goals and Alondra Hernandez-Vigil and Kassandra Carlos had the final goals of the game.

“This week was amazing. As a coach it made me proud,” said head coach Joey Micheletti. “They put in a tough practice and executed what they worked at.”
