Keeping up their winning ways, the Oakdale High School varsity girls cross country team has captured top honors in another meet. On Friday, Sept. 27 they won their second consecutive invitational. The team traveled south to Fresno for the annual Clovis West Golden Eagle Invitational. While there the varsity girls turned in a first-place performance.

The five-kilometer race saw three Lady Mustangs finish in the top 10. Freshman Addison Wylie placed second overall with a time of 20:34. Just under a minute later, junior Bradie Evans placed fifth overall with a time of 21:33. Senior Ava Calandro placed tenth with a time of 22:06. Turning in top 20 performances were senior Audri Scott; who placed 14th at 22:43 and junior Jordan Wylie finished 16th at 22:58.

Oakdale’s varsity boys also had an impressive performance in Fresno. The boys placed second overall in the race. Five runners helped take the Mustangs to the second-place honors and finished in the top 15. Junior Parker Whitemyer placed second overall at 16:36. Fourth place finisher was senior Jacob Cavanaugh at 16:44. A trio of Mustangs all finished within with in one minute of each other. Senior Ismael Dominguez finished seventh at 17:03. Sophomore Weston McGhee came across the line at 17:25 to finish 12th and junior Sean Muturi finished one second later to finish in 13th place.

Junior varsity boys finished in third place overall for small schools. Oakdale had three runners in the top 20. Freshman Roman Moreno placed 10th at 18:34. Freshman Daniel Anderson came in 15th at 18:51 and junior Mitchell Benning finished 20th at 19:07.

“It was very hot day to run on the state meet course,” said coach Guy Fowler. “We are getting better but there is still a lot of work to do. I think when the weather cools down, you will see our runners have significant improvement. Until that happens, we will have to deal with what Mother Nature gives us.”

The next cross country meet is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9 for the Valley Oak League #2 Cluster Meet, to be held at Mistlin Park in Ripon.
