On a cold night that saw light sprinkles throughout the contest, Oakdale’s varsity soccer girls found a way to get past rival Sonora on the home pitch. The non-conference match took place on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Oakdale and the Lady Mustangs defeated the visiting Wildcats 2-1. Both Oakdale goals came in the first half and off the foot of freshman Dakota Burford. The goals were assisted by Alexandria Ridenour and Claire McGee Brown. For the season, Burford has 10 goals.

In the second half, Sonora scored midway through. Oakdale’s goalkeeper was Keira McCulley. She played all 80 minutes and had one save on two attempts. In other action for the Mustangs, they participated in a tournament where they went 0-2-1. On Thursday, the girls were blanked by Christian Brothers 1-0. Oakdale then fell to Inderkum 1-0 on Dec. 8. Later that day, the girls tied Cosumnes Oaks 0-0. On Monday, Dec. 11 the girls were scheduled to host Beyer in a non-conference contest. The match took place following The Leader’s press time. On the schedule for Dec. 13, Oakdale hosts Turlock at 5 p.m.

Varsity Boys

The varsity soccer boys also took on Sonora the same night. However, the boys traveled up the hill. Oakdale had a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Mustangs also had a 2-1 advantage in the second half but could not hold on to the lead as they lost a hard fought 3-2 to the Wildcats. Dylan Krause scored the team’s first goal, unassisted and Jason Martinho notched the second tally, also unassisted.

The Mustangs return to the field on Tuesday, Dec. 19 when they host Hughson at 5:15 p.m.
