Mixed results for Oakdale’s spring sports squads

Oakdale High School’s baseball and volleyball boys battled in recent action while the golfers dodged some raindrops this past week. Softball, tennis and the Mustang swimmers also had games, matches and meets. Following is a recap of the competition.

 

BASEBALL

In a three-game series against Manteca, the varsity Mustangs took the first game but then lost two straight. A low scoring game one took place on March 31 at Manteca. Oakdale scored the lone run in the first inning in a 1-0 road win. Each team managed just one hit in the game. Eric Velazquez got Oakdale’s one hit and Landon Schutte brought him home in the top of the first inning. Schutte also pitched in the win. He pitched a complete game surrendering just one hit, striking out 10 while issuing two walks. On the season Schutte has a 5-1 record.

Oakdale hosted game two on April 2. Manteca took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third but Oakdale tacked on a run to make it 2-1 Manteca. The fourth inning the Buffaloes pulled away with four runs to help power the Buffaloes to an 8-2 victory. Griffin Costa led the Mustangs with two hits and an RBI. Bas Stice went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Rowdy Sphar also hit a double for Oakdale. Peyton Wallace pitched three innings giving up six hits and four earned runs. Wallace struck out five. Niki Jones pitched four innings giving up two earned runs and two strikeouts. Game three of the series took place Friday, April 4 at Manteca. It was Manteca squeezing by with a 3-1 win. Costa hit an RBI double for Oakdale. Jordan Haver pitched a complete game giving up two earned runs, striking out seven and issued four walks.

Junior Varsity - Oakdale dropped two games against Manteca in their home-away series. Game one Oakdale lost 13-2 at home on April 2 and on Friday they lost 6-1 to the Buffaloes on the road.

Freshmen - The freshmen team won their sixth straight game as they took care of Linden 5-3 on Friday, April 4.

 

SOFTBALL

A difficult road loss for the Oakdale High School varsity softball team. On April 2 Oakdale went to Manteca and lost 4-2 to the Lady Buffaloes. Oakdale has now lost three of their last four Valley Oak League games.

In the loss Oakdale gave up just three total hits but had a pair of costly errors. Jaelyn Lee drove in both runs for Oakdale and had a pair of hits. Reese Donaldson also had a pair of hits for the Mustangs. Grace Constant and Briley Everett each had one hit for Oakdale. Lee pitched a complete game for Oakdale. She had four strikeouts, issued four walks, zero and zero earned runs.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

A dramatic four set battle between Oakdale and Patterson boys volleyball took place at Patterson. Not only did it go four sets, three of those four went to extras as Patterson won 3-1. Patterson took set one 26-24, Oakdale countered with a thrilling 26-24 set two victory; the Tigers won set three 25-22 and in the final set, it was Patterson outlasting Oakdale 29-27.

In set one the two teams were tied at 19. Tanner Humphrey spike then tied it at 20. Tied at 23, Carson Campbell tapped the ball over between multiple Tigers to take a 24-23 advantage. However, Patterson would go on to win the match 26-24.

Set two Oakdale would take a 12-6 lead forcing a time out for the home team. Patterson came out of the time out and tied the game at 12 having Oakdale spend a time out. With the score tied at 13, Drew Magina hit the ball hard off the back line to give Oakdale a 14-13 lead. Declan Edwards lofted the ball over to the corner to give Oakdale a 16-13 lead. A Magina ace gave Oakdale an 18-15 advantage. However, the Tigers roared back and took a 21-18 lead making Oakdale spend another time out. The Mustangs chipped away at the deficit and Lucas Freitas connected on a spike to make it 23-21 Patterson. Humphrey delivered an ace to make it a 24-23 Patterson lead. The Mustangs tied it at 24, then Magina hit the ball off the hand of a Tiger to give Oakdale a 25-24 lead. Magina then scored the set winning point, 26-24.

In set three Oakdale once again started off fast building a 6-2 lead following a spike by Humphrey. It was a back-and-forth match which the Tigers ended by going on a 4-1 run to win 25-22. In the fourth set, Oakdale built a 10-5 early advantage but it was again and back and forth battle, with Patterson outlasting the Mustangs in a 29-27 final.

 

SWIMMING

Oakdale took on Sierra this past week. The varsity boys notched a commanding 110-28 victory while the girls fell to the Timberwolves 116-54. Here are the athletes who placed in the top three of their events.

100 Butterfly - Charlee Birdsong (2nd place)

100 Freestyle - Danica Potter (3rd place)

100 Backstroke - Ellie Frazer (1st place)

100 Breaststroke - Leah Sales (1st place)

GOLF BOYS

Monday, March 31 Oakdale hosted the Oakdale 100 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Twenty schools and 22 total teams hit the greens for this tournament. Bret Harte’s Eli Weidmann shot a 69 on the day through 18 holes; finding his way to the top of the leaderboard. Ripon’s number one team shot 317 for a first-place finish. Oakdale’s number one team placed second overall with a finish of 333.

Representing Oakdale team one was Estuardo Duque, Nolan Harris, Fred Herschbach, Owen Hauselmann and Brody Boysen. Duque shot 78 on the day. Harris finished at 84. Herschbach and Hauselmann were right behind him at 86 and 85. Boysen carded an 87.

Oakdale number two featured Robert Bordona, Easton Thalman, Julian Velazquez, Carter Hauselmann and Gage Ryland. As a team they shot 351; which landed them in sixth place overall. Velazquez shot a team low 85. Bordona was one stroke behind him at 86. Thalman and Hauselmann each shot 90 on the day. Ryland rounded out the day with a 98.

 

TENNIS

In their lone contest of the week, the Oakdale boys earned a 5-4 road win over Patterson. In singles action Camden Knight won 6-1,6-1. Jaxton Marler fell in his match, 6-3, 6-4. Matthew Yakligian got a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win. In straight sets Austin Speiller won 6-4, 6-3. Tristan McCarthy lost by a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) final. Max Birchall crafted a win, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles Patterson took two out of three from the Mustangs. Mitchell Benning and Brody Lev fell 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4). Danny Mendoza and Levi Von Riesen lost 6-0, 6-1. In a winner take all it was Abraham Jeevan and Anthony Llona prevailing for the Mustangs when they defeated their Patterson opponents by in three sets with the third going to a 10-7 tiebreaker.
