Split Of League Games For Varsity Basketball Girls

In a pair of home games this past week, the Oakdale varsity girls basketball team went 1-1.

On Tuesday night, Jan. 23, Oakdale (10-10, 3-5) hosted East Union (10-10, 4-4). In a Valley Oak League battle between two teams trying to make a playoff push, it was East Union who came out on top 59-45. Two days later the Lady Mustangs saddled up and regrouped with a 52-39 home win over Weston Ranch (4-18, 1-8).

In their home loss against the Lancers, Oakdale trailed the entire night and found themselves in a 33-20 halftime deficit. Oakdale’s leading scorer for the evening was Grace Higle. The junior co-captain scored a team high 17 points. Higle made an impact on the defensive side of the ball as well having five steals and five rebounds. Oakdale’s other co-captain, Sarah Bohrer, scored eight points and had a pair of assists. Freshman Alicia Platt scored seven points in the loss.

Thursday night the girls bounced back and defeated the Lady Cougars behind Higle’s 20 points and seven rebounds. Oakdale trailed by three to end the first quarter but took a 25-18 halftime advantage and did not look back. Bohrer added 14 points and Platt was also in double digits, having scored 11 points, and adding six rebounds.

This week will be a very busy one for the team. Oakdale was scheduled to play five road games in six days. The girls traveled to Waterford on Monday, Jan 29 in a non-league contest. Tuesday night Jan. 30, the team returned to Valley Oak League action when they traveled to Tracy to face the Kimball Jaguars (17-4, 8-1). Both games were held following The Leader’s press time. Thursday night the team continues their five game road trip with a game at first place Lathrop (16-4, 9-0). Saturday, Feb. 3 the team will travel to East Union to face the Lancers in a makeup game from earlier this month. Tuesday night, Feb. 6 the girls wrap up their road trip at Manteca (14-8, 6-3).

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

Recent action saw a trio of wins for the junior varsity girls. Oakdale made short work of East Union 44-26. Kayden Legan had a big week for the JV Lady Mustangs and it began against East Union. She scored a game high 17 points in the win. Kendra Branch scored 13 points and added five steals for Oakdale. Afton Daley had five steals and Tayler Lamb and Amber Robinson each provided five rebounds. Thursday night the girls rallied to defeat Weston Ranch 49-47. The team was down by five with less than two minutes to play. Legan scored a game high 28 points, including hitting five three-point field goals. Lamb had a double-double in the win as she scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Saturday night the girls hosted Tracy and took a 63-54 win in non-league action. Legan capped off her big week with a perfect nine-for-nine at the free throw line and scored 24 points.

 

FRESHMEN

The youngest Lady Mustangs team earned a Valley Oak League victory over East Union 24-20 behind an 11-point effort by Madison Jones. The girls fell to Weston Ranch 30-25 with Jones scoring nine points. Saturday night the girls defeated Tracy West 32-19 with Brooke Crowley scoring seven points, and both Jones and Harmony Edwards each scoring six points.
