Oakdale varsity softball saw their first major action of the season when they hit the road for a weekend tournament in Elk Grove. The Lady Mustangs went 5-0 in the tournament and took the title convincingly.
In their first game of the weekend Oakdale defeated Monterey Trail 11-1 behind 10 hits, including a home run off the bat of senior Grace Green. Green went 3-for-3 in the game and had three RBI. Pitchers Lexi Webb and Mariyn Waterman combined for a one-hitter. Webb started the game and struck out six.
Oakdale’s second game of the tournament was a 7-2 win over Reno High. Waterman pitched six innings and struck out five. The long ball helped power Oakdale as Webb and Jazzy Velasquez each hit home runs. Green went 2-for-2 with a triple and a pair of RBI.
Oakdale’s third win of the weekend was 6-3 over Vacaville. The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and came out on top. Webb continued to swing a big bat as she connected on a pair of triples and pitched six strong innings. Marissa Moffet also had a big day at the plate as she went 2-for-3.
Their fourth game was a rematch from the playoffs of last season where Oakdale lost to Vanden last spring. However, this time Oakdale hammered them for a 12-run first inning in a 14-0 win. Webb went yard for the second time in the tournament and brought in three runs. Green also had three RBI and Adriana Aguilar brought in a pair of runs. Chloe Vierra had a multi-hit game as well.
The Lady Mustangs capped off the weekend with a 5-1 win over Oak Ridge. Aguilar connected on a home run and Brittany Bye went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a triple. Webb completed her huge weekend with a six-inning five-strikeout performance in the circle. From the dish she went 2-for-3 and brought in two runs.
“Everyone contributed at the Elk Grove Tournament. Pitchers (Webb and Waterman) led our defense,” Lady Mustangs coach Larry Loger said. “It was especially gratifying to beat Vanden; who knocked us out of the playoffs last year. Webb, Green and Bye were especially hot at the plate.”
Tuesday, March 13 Oakdale traveled to Merced for a non-conference game that took place following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale will have its home opener Saturday, March 17 at noon when they welcome Patterson to town. This will be their final non-conference game and they open their Valley Oak League season at Kimball on Thursday, March 21.
