Coming up this weekend, it’s the Eighth Annual Grant Altamirano Horseshoe Tournament and BBQ at Hogan Park at the Escalon Community Center, 1051 Escalon Ave. on Saturday, Aug. 5. This is held to contribute to the educational trust fund for Grant’s two children and a scholarship in Grant’s name is also being established this year to be awarded annually to Escalon High School student-athletes as Grant was a recipient of the Engel Award for Outstanding Athlete while attending EHS.
Same day Registration/Check-in begins at 8 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. Saturday. Play starts at 9 a.m.
Entry fee is $120 per team or $60 per player and any individuals will be paired up where possible the day of the event. Fee also includes entry into a single elimination cornhole tournament and participation is optional. Champions receive a custom-built cornhole set complete with boards and bags. Any who wish to attend but not play are encouraged and a small donation in any amount is appreciated. There will be four regulation horseshoe pits in a double elimination format with cancelation scoring. Cash prizes for the top four teams. Tournament champions will also receive trophies.
Free with the entry fee/donation is a meal including tri-tip and chicken with sides, beverages (beer, soda and water) and this includes immediate family members of all players and donors as well. The ‘Big Bouncing Bin/Slide Thingy’ is back for the kids ages 2 to 16 years old.
