Historic win on the gridiron, golf girls victorious

Valley Oak League regular season continues to roll on for Oakdale High School squads. The recent fall season contests saw the girls golf team taking on Patterson on Thursday, Sept. 19. It was a victory for Oakdale, shooting a 212, while the Tigers did not submit a full scorecard. Oakdale’s Bella Cortez led the team with 36. Hannah Herschbach shot a 38 for Oakdale. Rounding out the afternoon for Oakdale were Xcarlet Duque (45), Reagan Shatswell (45) and Brynlee McBride (48).

 

Flag Football

Girls flag football, meanwhile, earned their first ever victory in program history with a 32-0 home win over Mountain House. The contest featured a few touchdowns from Dakota Burford and strong team defense to keep Mountain House off the scoreboard. Oakdale will look to keep their momentum going when they resume play on Oct. 1 against East Union at home. Two days later Oakdale will travel to play East Union. Kickoff for the games will be 7 p.m.

 

Water Polo

Boys water polo competed in tournament play this past weekend. Oakdale lost to Oak Ridge 14-2 and 10-4 to Christian Brothers. Wednesday, Sept. 25, Oakdale will host Ripon at 5 p.m. The girls team won their lone match of the week when they knocked off Mountain House 17-3 on Monday, Sept. 16.

 

Cross Country

It was a successful weekend for the Oakdale High School Mustangs cross country teams. Saturday, Sept. 21 the team headed to Ripon’s Mistlin Park for the annual Frogtown Invitational. The varsity girls placed first overall for small schools and the varsity boys also claimed first place in their division.

The varsity girls had a handful of runners place in the top 30. On the three-mile course freshman Addison Wylie finished fourth overall at 20:19. Senior Ava Calandro finished 12th at 21:16. Juniors Bradie Evans (17th, 21:48) and Jordan Wylie (25th, 22:57) placed in the top 25. Senior Audri Scott finished in 27th place at 22:43.

For the varsity boys, they turned in a solid performance as they had six runners in the top 15, four of them in the top 10. Junior Parker Whitemyer placed second overall on the three-mile course with a time of 16:29. Six seconds behind him was teammate, senior Jacob Cavanaugh who placed third. Junior Sean Muturi finished in seventh at 17:20. Rounding out the top 10 was senior Ismael Dominguez, who placed 10th at 17:33. Sophomores Quinn Baca and Weston McGhee placed 11th and 12th. Baca finished the race in 17:40 and McGhee finished in 17:48.

The junior varsity boys placed second in their division. Oakdale had four runners finish in the top 10. Jesus Covarrubias finished in fourth place at 18:45. Mitchell Benning placed fifth at 19:22. Landon Arnold placed seventh at 19:31. Coltyn Renault finished in ninth place at 19:42.

The freshman boys placed fourth overall in the two-mile run. Oakdale had a pair of runners in the top five. Daniel Anderson placed third at 12:26 while Roman Moreno placed fifth at 12:46.

“Team competition wise, we did very well. As for individual performances, I think the athletes would tell you they did not have a good day and I would agree with them,” said coach Guy Fowler. “We need to be more consistent with the times and not bouncing up and down. So, it is back to work and focusing on the little things.”

The next meet is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 at Woodward Park in Fresno for the Clovis West Golden Eagle Invitational.
