The Modesto Junior College women’s golf team planted their flag in the sand and captured the 2022 California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf State Championship after an incredible second day of scoring at Morro Bay Golf Course earlier this month.

Among the members of the team is Oakdale High School alum Shealyn Hanrahan, who paced the Pirates with her two-day total of 167.

It was the second straight state title for the MJC Pirates, who topped the field at Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande in 2021.

Following a day where only four golfers in the entire field broke 80, the Pirates had four of their own golfers shoot a 79 for a team score of 316 and a two-round total of 666, a mere two shots ahead of state runner-up, College of the Canyons, who shot a Day 2 score of 337 for a tournament score of 668.

Saddleback College shot an impressive 329 on Day 2 to finish third overall with a 672, followed by Reedley College (685), Napa Valley (693), Fullerton (695), Sierra (718) and Bakersfield (741).

For the champion Pirates, the foursome of Shealyn Hanrahan, Makena Ebster, Mikaella Manto and Olivia Machado each carded a 7-over-par 79 on the second day to help Modesto shave 34 shots off their first day team total of 350.

Fullerton College’s Catherine Lee was the 2022 Individual State Champion after shooting a 75-79-154. She topped College of the Canyons’ Motoko Shimoji (76-78-154) for the top spot by way of a tiebreaker. Saddleback’s Nicole Whipple finished third in the state with a 158.

This was the third state championship for MJC head coach Milan Motroni in the past five seasons. From the individual results, five Modesto golfers – including Hanrahan – tied for tenth best score, truly a solid team effort with no weaknesses. The 2022 Pirates won the Big 8 Conference, NorCal Regionals and the State Championship.

The top four teams from Northern California and the top four from Southern California competed at Morro Bay Golf Course over the two-day championship on Nov. 13 and 14.

The Modesto Junior College championship team is comprised of 100 percent local talent. Hanrahan is from Oakdale, with other members of the team including Janea Caparros, Enochs; Makena Ebster, Gregori; Mikaella Manto, Sierra; Olivia Machado, Hilmar; Zoe Bremer, Ripon.
