Valley Oak League competition for Oakdale’s golf boys started off with a light rain on Monday, April 11, said coach Lee McGhee … “and then the wind started.”
The golfers were at the par 72 Manteca Golf Course for the VOL Meet #4.
“Windy to quite windy conditions made for a battle with Mother Nature along with the course,” noted McGhee. “Oakdale finished the day with five of the top 10 scores. Cooper Pitney (78) battled well and found himself at the top of the leaderboard when all scores came in. He birdied two of his last nine holes to finish strong. Nolan Harris (80) finished his last 11 holes at even par capping off four tournaments of excellent play in the VOL matches.”
Carson Middaugh (92) had a front nine score of 42. Grant Weber (89) had four birdies on his card contributing another score counting toward the team total.
“Devyn Scott (92) had his best VOL tournament score and contributed to our team score keeping the Mustangs in first place heading into the VOL Championships,” McGhee explained. “There have been eight different players whose scores have helped our team win in the four VOL tournament matches.”
The coach said the Mustangs are looking forward to a strong team effort to stay ahead of the rest of the VOL when they play at Creekside on Monday, May 2 for the final VOL Meet of the regular season.
“It has been fun to see our guys constantly working and pushing each other to do their best and continue to develop as golfers,” McGhee said. “Their efforts are definitely showing by staying atop the VOL.”
Individually, it was Cooper Pitney in first place overall with his six over par 78, followed by Nolan Harris in second with his score of 80. Grant Weber was eighth, 89; Carson Middaugh, ninth, 92; Devyn Scott, 10th, 92. Oakdale’s Robert Bordona carded a 101 on the day, finishing in the top 20 at number 18.
Team scores were: Oakdale 431; Kimball 461; East Union 461; Manteca 519; Sierra 567; followed by Central Catholic and Weston Ranch.
TENNIS
Kicking off the week with a 7-2 win on the road at Manteca, Oakdale tennis got wins at the number three through six boys singles, as well as sweeping the three boys doubles matches.
They hosted East Union on April 5 and put away the Lancers in a 9-0 final with seven match wins and two by forfeit.
They rounded out the week with a strong 8-1 showing against Weston Ranch, with seven match wins, one forfeit and just one loss, at boys number two doubles.
“Last week we beat Manteca, East Union, and Weston Ranch. It was a great week,” said head coach Grant Miller. “The guys got the job done, and have put us in position to get back into first place with a victory at Central Catholic on Tuesday.”
The match was played after press time for The Leader.
“It’s a great spot to be in. We’ve clinched a playoff spot, and we still have a chance at the league title,” added Miller.
