Cross Country
In the cross country subsection meet, Oakdale took first place for both boys and girls. The event took place on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Frogtown, Calaveras County Fairgrounds. This event was a qualifier for this weekend’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Meet.
The varsity girls took first place in the three mile race. Freshman Addison Wylie placed eighth overall with a time of 19:47. Sophomore Kylie Fast placed 20th overall at 20:34. Rounding out Oakdale’s top finishers were Bradie Evans (24th; 20:59); Taylor Reams (26th; 21:07) and Jordan Wylie (28th; 21:23).
For the boys, it was a first place team finish. Senior Jacob Cavanaugh placed eighth overall at 16:42. Oakdale had three more runners place in the top 20. Those runners were sophomore Quinn Baca (12th; 16:59); senior Ismael Dominguez (15th; 17:02) and junior Parker Whitemyer (16th, 17:03). Weston McGhee placed 38th at 17:37.
The frosh/soph boys also took first place as a team in their three mile race. Five runners placed in the top ten for Oakdale. Dirk Scott placed first overall at 17:38. Mitchell Benning finished third and Landon Arnold placed fourth as they crossed the finish line simultaneously at 18:02. Daniel Anderson placed sixth overall in 18:22. Roman Moreno placed seventh at 18:44.
“It was a day of just qualifying for the section finals and all three teams did that,” said coach Guy Fowler. “We did not need to run fast times and we did not get anybody hurt. This week a berth to the California State Championships is on the line for the varsity teams. We need to run well and finish in the top three to qualify.”
Lady Mustang Golf
The 2024 season has come to an end for Oakdale High School’s Lady Mustang golfers. Over the last two weeks Oakdale has experienced a roller coaster of emotions. On Monday, Oct. 28 the team won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championship and on Monday, Nov. 4 the team was eliminated at the CIF Masters.
This season Oakdale won their eighth straight Valley Oak League and went undefeated. In the Section action, Oakdale shot 444 to bring home the blue banner. Bella Cortez shot a team best 84 on the day through 18 holes. Just two strokes behind her was Hannah Herschbach at 86. Brynlee McBride shot an 87 and Reagan Shatswell turned in an 88.
“These girls are very deserving of their success yet they have been so humble in their efforts,” said coach Jeremy Fields. “Many of these young ladies have been golfing for years, hitting shot after shot on the range or finishing holes near darkness. So it is very cool to see them accomplish these amazing feats.”
Monday, Nov. 4 the team finished just short at Masters. The tournament was hosted at Spanos Park in Stockton. Freshman Cortez shot a team low 80 in the tournament.
“Seniors Hannah Herschbach and Xcarlet Duque won a championship each of their four years on the team and capped it off by winning a Section Championship. We had great contributions from our underclassmen as well; juniors Reagan Shatswell, Analise Velazquez, Sam Olivera along with freshmen Bella Cortez and Brynlee McBride have been an integral part of the team’s success,” added Fields. “Many of these girls participated in the ACORN Youth program held at Oakdale Golf and Country Club and that has proven to be very beneficial to their growth on the golf course.”
