Cross country runners compete in Saturday ‘showdown’

Atwater High School hosted the 2024 Screamin’ Scott Showdown on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The Oakdale High School varsity girls team placed second overall on the three-mile course. Oakdale girls had two runners place in the top 20. Junior Bradie Evans finished 17th overall (20:37) and freshman Addison Wylie finished 18th (20:45). Placing in the top 25 were senior Ava Calandro, 21st (21:06) and junior Jordan Wylie, 23rd overall at 21:12.

For the boys it was a successful trip as well; they placed first overall in the three-mile run. Three Mustang runners placed in the top 10. Junior Ismael Dominguez finished fourth (15:38). Senior Jacob Cavanaugh placed eighth at 16:01 and one second later junior Parker Whitemyer crossed the finish line and placed ninth. Sophomore Quinn Baca finished 13th in 16:17.

The JV boys placed 10th overall as a team in their 2.2-mile event. The junior varsity girls did not field a full team.

“We had a really good day,” summarized coach Guy Fowler. “Today was not about racing but about working as team and to see where we are in our training. For the most part, the kids are ready to get going and their training shows. We cannot wait for our next competition but until then it is back to work.”

The next event for the cross country runners in scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14.
