Baseball earns sweep, County Clash welcomes teams

It was a fast-paced week for Oakdale High School athletes, with teams taking part in a number of Valley Oak League contests along with some special events and invitationals.

Following is a look at recent action.

 

BASEBALL

A three-game series went to the Oakdale High School Mustangs on the diamond. The varsity boys outscored Sierra High School 19-2 in the series and won all three games. On March 24 at home, Oakdale won 5-0. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Oakdale tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Four different players got a hit for the home team. A triple by Jordan Haver led the way. Peyton Wallace, Eric Velazquez and Ayden Ardis each got a hit. Landon Schutte had two runs batted in. Schutte pitched a complete game for Oakdale. He pitched a no-hitter and issued one walk. He also struck out 10 batters.

Game two was held at Sierra. Schutte continued his big week against Sierra. He connected on a two-run home run to help power Oakdale to 6-0 victory. The Mustangs only had a total of three hits. Griffin Costa and Velazquez each had one hit. Peyton Wallace earned the win as he pitched five-and-two-thirds innings and gave up three hits and struck out eight. Niki Jones came in and pitched one-and-a-third innings. He struck out three batters.

The series came to a close on Friday afternoon as Oakdale won 8-2. Schutte drove in three runs on a double. Costa added two runs. Bas Stice had an RBI double. Jordan Haver pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out 16 batters.

This week Oakdale will take on first place Manteca in a three-game series.

Junior Varsity - Oakdale took two-of-three from Sierra. Oakdale dropped game one 9-5. The JV boys regrouped with a 9-1 victory and then a 6-5 home win.

Freshman - Oakdale defeated Sierra 13-1 and 14-2.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

The annual County Clash track and field event was held at Oakdale High School on Friday, March 28 welcoming Stanislaus, San Joaquin and Merced county athletes from 30 schools. Oakdale’s girls team placed third overall with a point total of 53; 10 points behind first place Mountain House. The boys tied for fourth place with 42 points. Pitman finished first with 55. Here are the athletes who placed in the top 10 of their events.

GIRLS – 400 Meters - Jordan Wylie 9th place 1:05.87; 800 Meters – Jordan Wylie 8th place 2:40.14

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Oakdale High School boys volleyball team hosted Sierra recently, falling to the Timberwolves 3-0.

The first set Oakdale went up 1-0 but Sierra countered with a 4-0 run to go up 4-1. Tanner Humphrey found a hole in the back line and made it a 7-4 Sierra advantage. Declan Edwards hit the ball hard to the back line for a Mustang point, down 8-6. Moments later Humphrey’s spike tied the set at 8. Edwards block tied it at 9. A block by Mortiz Toenjes made it 14-13 Sierra. Drew Magina’s ace tied it at 14. Carson Campbell’s ace gave Oakdale a 16-15 advantage. However, Sierra went on a 4-0 run to go up 19-16, leading to a Mustang timeout. Oakdale lost set one, 21-25.

In the second set a dig by Humphrey set up a Magina point to tie it at 2. Sierra went on a 7-0 run to go up 9-2; time out Oakdale. Magina stopped the run with a ball to the corner to make it 11-3. Oakdale trailed 20-8 and eventually lost set two, 12-25.

In the third and final set, Iker Juarez delivered a kill to make it an 8-5 Mustang deficit. Down 12-5 Oakdale called a time out. Down 21-8, the tandem of Magina and Toenjes combined for a block to make it 21-9 but the final was an 11-25 final set loss. Oakdale also fell in non-league play to the Escalon Cougars, 3-0.

 

SOFTBALL

It took seven innings for Oakdale to get on the board, but the Lady Mustangs battled to a 3-1 victory over East Union. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Oakdale scored three runs for the thrilling win, which ended a three-game losing streak.

Oakdale had four hits in the game, Grace Constant, Reese Donaldson, Saige Everett and Madi Bohannon all had hits in the win. Donaldson hit a triple while Everett and Jaelyn Lee drove in runs for Oakdale. The girls used their speed on the bases to their advantage as Constant and Bohannon each stole a base. Lee picked up her seventh win of the season in the circle. She pitched a complete game for Oakdale, giving up just three hits while she struck out six and walked two.

This was Oakdale’s only game of the week. They improved to 8-5, 3-2 on the season. Oakdale is currently in third place in the Valley Oak League behind Central Catholic (12-4, 4-0) and Mountain House (14-3, 4-2).

Junior Varsity - A tough day for the JV team as they lost 8-3 against East Union. Both the JV and varsity are scheduled to return to action on April 8 against Patterson.

 

BOYS TENNIS

Oakdale played a pair of tennis matches this past week and came away with a 1-1 record. On Tuesday, March 24 Oakdale lost to Mountain House 9-0 but bounced back with a 9-0 victory over East Union.

In the loss to Mountain House Camden Knight lost 6-2, 6-1. Jaxton Marler fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Matthew Yakligian lost 6-2, 6-2. Both Levi Hensley and Austin Speiller were shut out 6-0, 6-0. Tristan McCarty lost 7-5, 6-1. In doubles the team of Mitchell Benning and Max Birchall were shut out 6-0, 6-0. Brody Lev and Anthony Llona lost 6-1, 6-1. Border Rath and Danny Mendoza were shut out 6-0, 6-0.

The next match, it was a much different outcome for the Mustangs as they swept the Lancers. Knight won 6-2, 6-2 and Marler won 6-0, 6-3. Yakligian won 6-3, 6-1. Hensley cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Speiller won 6-0, 6-1. McCarthy won via forfeit. In doubles action Birchall and Benning earned a hard fought win, 6-3, 6-4. Lev and Llona went three sets and prevailed 2-6, 8-5, 0-0 (10-5). Abraham Jeevan and Rath won 6-2, 6-4.

The Mustangs have three matches remaining in the regular season. On April 3 the team will travel to Patterson to face the Tigers. April 8 Oakdale faces off against Sierra on the road and the season finale will be at home on April 10 against Central Catholic. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
