Glen Ivan Griggs, 92, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2014 in Oroville, CA.
He was born March 28, 1922 in Saskatchewan, Canada to Stella M. and Howard I. Griggs and moved with his family to Ceres in 1933. He left high school at age 15 to learn the meat-cutting trade at Anchor Meat Company in Modesto.
He enlisted in the US Navy in December 1941. During World War II, he served as a cook at the Naval Hospital in Oceanside, CA and on ships in the South Pacific, where he saw duty in the Philippines, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Hawaii.
He met and married his future wife, Agnes Rebecca Moore, while stationed at Oceanside. After the war, the two settled in Oakdale, where Mr. Griggs built their home and they raised their two children, Linda and Gary.
Mr. Griggs was the co-owner and butcher of Westside Grocery & Meat Market in Oakdale from 1948-1976; he was an accomplished handyman who could fix just about anything and was an avid gardener.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Griggs Cress; son, Gary Allen Griggs; daughter-in-law, Judy Griggs; three grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Agnes, in 1995; his parents, and his four siblings: Florence, James, Gladys and William.
Graveside services will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Oakdale on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 10 a.m.
