Calvin K. Chu, 82, of Waterford, CA, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson with family by his side. He died of pancreatic cancer.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Chu; three daughters Julie Arnold and her husband Rich Arnold, Jamie Chu and her partner Randy Gallegos, Vickie Chu-Hermis and her husband Andrew Hermis; his grandchildren Breann Cochran, Justin Arnold and Taylor Cochran. Calvin is also survived by his elder brother, Charlie Chu.
Calvin was born in Canton, China in 1933 to Bill Leong Chu and Gong Quai Lin Chu. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in various areas including Japan. After his service, he moved to Waterford where he owned and operated numerous businesses: Valley Food Center, Valley IGA and Waterford Plaza LLC.
He loved the community in which he lived and was a member of numerous organizations including the Waterford Lions Club for 55 years, Fah Yuen Association of San Francisco, Visalia Cultural Center, California Grocer’s Association, Stanislaus Grocer’s Association, Independent Grocer’s Alliance (IGA) and longtime member of Oakdale Golf and Country Club.
Calvin was a recipient of numerous awards in his lifetime including the Independent Grocer’s Alliance (IGA) Gold Award and the Lion’s Club Lifetime Member designation.
A family statement reads: “Calvin was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was kind, intelligent, loyal and humorous with a gentle spirit. He will truly be missed.”
Memorial and burial services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Avenue in Hughson.
