Business owner Adrianna Alves is trying something new this Small Business Saturday.

The owner and founder of downtown Oakdale boutique Wynfull + Wonder is hoping to take advantage of the busy Saturday to not just support her business, but an organization as well.

On Saturday, Nov. 25 as local businesses open their doors for holiday shoppers, Alves will open hers for shoppers as well as photos with Santa Claus and a clothing drive. All hosted as a charity event for HAVEN (Healthy Alternatives to Violent Environments) Stanislaus.

“It’s all for HAVEN Stanislaus,” the small business owner shared.

Photos with Santa will be offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25. Photo prices will be $15 for a single person and $30 for a family of two to four persons. All proceeds from the photos will be donated to the HAVEN non-profit.

“Being that it’s my first year, in business in retail,” Alves said of the first-time event. “Retail is retail. Retail is about shopping and spending money and I wanted it to be about a little bit more. I’m very new to the business world, I’m very new at the shop and the community. So, I wanted the season to mean something.”

The boutique owner further shared she first became inspired to host the event after meeting the Azevedo family when approached for a donation for the Harvesting Hope-The Rachel Azevedo Foundation Golf Tournament early this year. Describing a connection to the family upon meeting them, Alves shared she plans to continue support of the family and organization for years to come.

“I wanted all the proceeds from the Santa photos to go to HAVEN and I know I’ve donated the boutique clothing, whatever accumulates in my storage,” she said of the inaugural event. “So I knew I also wanted to do a clothes drive.”

Alves has partnered with her son Matthew, a senior at Big Valley Grace Christian School, to help with the all-day clothing donation event. The duo is requesting new or gently used clothing, not to exceed six pieces per customer. An in-store discount will be offered to customers donating clothing.

“He will be setting up the booth within the store and running that part and donating his time to assist the store for his government class too,” she said of her son’s participation. “If you donated clothes, you get a discount in store on your purchase of anything.”

What the business owner has learned over recent months is that she is fully invested in the venture.

“It’s not just business for me. That is my home away from home,” she said of the boutique. “Sometimes I spend more time there than I do at home. It’s taken such a big part of me, that I want to make it more than just a retail store.”

Hosting events such as this or partnering with the Azevedo family for future events are examples of how Alves wants to do more than simply own a shop and care for customers.

“You know growing up, this is the season where you’re supposed to do something for others. You’re supposed to do something that’s greater than the retail store.”

Wynfull + Wonder is at 132 N. Yosemite Ave., Oakdale. Customers are encouraged to use the North Third Avenue access for better parking options and ease of entry. Holiday store hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
