The start to the OBSA – Oakdale Baseball Softball Association – season originally scheduled for Saturday morning, March 15 has been canceled.
League officials had hopes of getting the Opening Day ceremonies, with introduction of more than 70 teams and almost 850 players, in at the T.L. Davis Sports Complex in Oakdale, but determined at mid-afternoon Friday, March 14 that the cancellation was necessary. Due to steady rain throughout much of the day on Friday on top of wet weather earlier in the week, officials agreed to call off the festivities.
Along with the dozens of Oakdale-based teams, the OBSA also schedules games against some older division softball and baseball teams from Riverbank and Escalon, the three communities competing with each other during the course of the season.
There are six playing fields at T.L. Davis and other sites that host games are Fair Oaks School and Cottles Woods Park in Oakdale.
Team photos are still on schedule for Saturday.
League ambassador Paul Westberg said with the loss of the traditional ‘Opening Day’ program, officials are working on having a special closing ceremony involving all teams, players, coaches and volunteers on May 10, with details to be released at a later date.
