Once again it is that time of year when Valley Home residents can look forward to a delightful step back in time, relax, sit back and enjoy a Sunday afternoon of good old fashioned silent film comedy. We have received word from Sharon Hofmann that St. John’s Lutheran Church here in Valley Home is preparing to host their Seventh Annual Silent Movie, on Sunday, June 3 at 3 p.m.
This year’s movie is entitled “College,” a 1927 comedy-drama silent film, directed by James W. Horne and Buster Keaton, and starring Buster Keaton as Ronald, Anne Cornwall as Mary Hayes, Harold Goodwin as Jeff, Snitz Edwards as Dean Edwards and Florence Turner as Ronald’s mother.
Set in southern California, the movie opens with our hero, Ronald graduating High School as the school’s “most brilliant scholar.” At his graduation, Ronald speaks on “The Curse of the Athlete,” arguing that books are more important than athletics.
Ronald decides to follow Mary, who has rejected him because she likes athletes more than book worms, to Clayton, which the Dean describes as an “Athlete-Infested College.” Hoping to impress Mary, Ronald quickly tries out for the baseball, track and field teams, but proves to be totally inept at them. At the same time, he attempts to work jobs as a soda jerk and as a waiter in blackface while trying to keep these jobs a secret from Mary. These jobs prove to be just a small beginning in Ronald’s frantic attempts to woo Mary. Yes, you guessed it, there is more to come!
Dave Moreno, from Ironstone Vineyards, returns once again to provide the soundtrack for the movie, accompanied by Matias Bombal, with his usual flamboyance, as emcee and vocal soloist.
Following the show, downstairs in the Social Hall, will be free homemade ice cream and coffee. Homemade pie is for sale at $3 a slice. Orders for full pies must be in no later than May 20. You may call Lois Hofmann at 209-847-0733 to order.
The movie is free, but donations will be appreciated. The Church and Social Hall are handicap accessible.

Our Valley Home community will be celebrating a special birthday this month for Garrett Bryhni, who will be turning 16. Garrett has been busy on his Oakdale High School baseball team and getting his hog ready for the County Fair. Garrett is also one of our hardest workers at our Valley Home Park. Happy Birthday, Garrett!

This month also finds us celebrating the High School graduation of MaryBeth Carpenter. MaryBeth and her family are very active members of our community, helping out at almost every activity that takes place in Valley Home. Congratulations on your graduation, MaryBeth!

4-H president, Jenna Heaton would like to invite everyone to the Valley Home Cemetery Memorial Day service on May 28th. Our 4-H members will participate in the ceremony, laying a wreath after raising the American Flag. Taps is played and a 21 gun salute is rendered. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. and all are invited to honor our veterans.

We would like to recognize two of our favorite cowboys. Tanner and Travis Kent are earning a great deal of respect in the rodeo world. Both boys are extremely talented and we are looking forward to a great future for the two Kent brothers.

Ahh! There is nothing like a refreshing sip of old fashioned ice cold lemonade on a warm day to make a body relax and feel good! We have received word that Bryce McKenzie will have a lemonade stand in participation of National Lemonade Day on Saturday, May 19 around 11 a.m. on Lone Tree Road.

We have received word that Friends of the Escalon Library will be having its quarterly meeting on Thursday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Escalon Library. You are invited to knock on the back door if you would like to attend. The Friends are seeking new members, only $10 per year.
