Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the lowest Modesto price of $2.51 per gallon was recorded on July 29, 2016 and the lowest national price was $2.13 per gallon, also in 2016. Highest average in Modesto was $5.42 on July 29, 2022 and the highest national average of $4.21 was in 2022 as well.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.35/gallon, down 3.1 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.39; Oakland - $4.62, down 5.4 cents from $4.67; and San Jose - $4.52/gallon, down 4.9 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.57/gallon.

“We continue to see a mixed bag when it comes to gas prices across the country: states in the Great Lakes region are still being jolted by the Joliet, Illinois refinery outage, which has also impacted gas prices in some areas of Canada, while areas like the West Coast continue to see notable declines,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With the summer winding down and GasBuddy data showing disappointing gasoline demand and struggling oil prices, we could eventually see the national average falling a bit more, especially once the refinery in Illinois restarts operations. While hurricane season hasn’t been a factor yet, it’s also just starting to get into its prime, and that does remain a quiet wildcard for now.”

GasBuddy’s survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country.
