Slight drop in pump prices around region

After seeing some increases the past few weeks, local motorists were greeted recently by a price drop at the pumps.

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 10.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.60/gallon on Sept. 30, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 13.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 108.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 1.2 cents in the last week and stands at $3.54 per gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 1.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.17/gallon. The national average is down 15.4 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 63.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.59/gallon on Sept. 30 while the most expensive was $5.49, a difference of $1.90/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.39 while the highest was $6.69, a difference of $3.30/gallon.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.64/gallon, down 6.6 cents from last week’s $4.70; Oakland - $4.85, down 7.6 cents from $4.92; and San Jose - $4.79, down 11.4 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.91/gallon.

“Another week brings a mixed bag at the gas pump, with gas prices declining in slightly more than half of U.S. states while others have seen increases due to some refinery snags and maintenance that have emerged, temporarily delaying declines in some areas,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Meanwhile, GasBuddy data shows 18 states with sub-$3 per gallon average gas prices, a count that should certainly rise over the next few weeks.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the lowest Modesto price of $2.62 per gallon recorded on Sept. 30, 2016 and the highest of $5.88 on Sept. 30, 2022. Lowest U.S. average on Sept. 30 was $2.18 in 2020; the highest of $3.81 was in 2023.
