San Joaquin County Parks schedules weekend events

Some special events are coming up, hosted through the San Joaquin Country Parks Department.

All are scheduled at Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park, I-5 at Eight-Mile Road, Stockton. Call for more information, 209-953-8814.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, it’s the ‘Acorns, Woodpeckers and Galls, Oh My’ program at 11 a.m.

Enjoy an easy walk along the paved Yokuts Trail and explore the Valley Oak Woodlands. See acorns ripening, woodpeckers and fantastically shaped galls incubating on limbs and leaves. No pets. Open to all ages, there is no reservation required for this free program, though there is a $6 cash parking fee.

Mark the calendar for Saturday, Nov. 9 and plan to attend Astronomy in the Park. View planets through giant telescopes after sunset. The Nov. 9 program begins at 5 p.m. and features Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, M31 (Andromeda Galaxy) and is free for all ages. There is a $6 cash parking fee and the event is hosted, weather permitting. The final program of the year will be Saturday, Dec. 7 at 4:45 p.m.

The program is hosted in cooperation with the Stockton Astronomical Society and Oak Grove Docent Council.

On Saturday, Nov. 16 anglers can enjoy the 40th annual Trout Bout. Kids fish free and there will be both youth and adult competitions.

There is a $5 cash fishing permit fee and $6 cash parking fee. All those 16 and over must have a valid California fishing license. There is a five trout limit. A total of 1,700 pounds of trout will be stocked for the event, with the gates open at 6:15 a.m. and the last weigh in at 12:30 p.m.; this event is supported by the Delta Fly Fishers.
