Teri Borba, a self-taught artist that was raised in the Central Valley and currently resides in Oakdale, has emerged as a rising star in the art world. Her artistic journey began as a form of therapy to combat her anxiety and ankylosing spondylitis (a form of spinal arthritis) and it has blossomed into a profound expression of creativity and self-discovery. With a penchant for texture and a relentless desire to learn and evolve, Borba’s art has become a transformative and healing force in her life.
After spending over three decades as a hairstylist, Borba found herself naturally drawn to the world of art. The skills she honed in her previous career seamlessly translated into her newfound passion. Although she refuses to confine herself to any particular style or label, she acknowledges her affinity for texture in her work. With each passing day, she explores new techniques and materials, continuously pushing the boundaries of her creativity.
For the past five years, Borba has embarked on a therapeutic journey through art. It has become an outlet for her emotions, a source of healing for her mind and body. Through her artwork, she expresses herself in ways that words alone cannot capture. The act of creating with her hands provides a profound sense of fulfillment and joy, enriching her life in ways she never thought possible.
Encouraged by others, Borba decided to submit her art to the Emerging Artist Exhibition, hosted previously at the Mistlin Gallery in downtown Modesto. The experience was both exhilarating and humbling for the artist, as it marked her first opportunity to showcase her work to the public. Emotions ran high, but Borba’s dedication and determination prevailed.
Among the pieces Borba submitted, one stood out as her true masterpiece: Matilda. This extraordinary artwork took over a year to complete, comprising thousands of paintskins meticulously arranged to form a captivating garden of flowers. Matilda embodies Borba’s journey of learning, evolution, dedication, creativity, determination, love, strength, and courage. It has become a symbol of her artistic prowess and a testament to her resilience.
Borba’s talent and hard work paid off when Matilda received a prestigious second-place honor at the Emerging Artist Exhibition. Additionally, four out of the five pieces she entered were selected for inclusion in the exhibition, solidifying her rising status in the art community. Borba’s dedication and passion continue to drive her forward, as she explores new avenues and challenges herself to create even more captivating and emotionally resonant works of art.
