The event itself isn’t until well into the fall, but the kickoff is coming up quickly.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of San Joaquin Valley is on the schedule for Oct. 20; those interested in learning more about the event are invited to the official kickoff on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Kickoff will be in the Science Community Center at Modesto Junior College, West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave., Modesto from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Serving as keynote speaker for the kickoff and also as Executive Ambassador for the 2024 Strides event is Maryn Pitt. She currently is the Policy Director of the Manufacturers Council of the Central Valley, a position through which she brings extensive policy leadership and technical expertise to the manufacturing industry of California's Central Valley.

Pitt is also a two-time cancer survivor, having battled breast cancer in 2010 and cervical cancer in 2023.

She is dedicated to community service, and is involved with a number of organizations, including the Stanislaus County Workforce Investment Board, the Stanislaus County Continuum of Care Board, and the Rotary Club International, Turlock Chapter, where she held leadership positions.

Along with Pitt providing some remarks at the kickoff, the “Let’s Party In Pink!” gathering on Aug. 7 will provide participants with some fundraising ideas and tips; there will be an opportunity to create a Wall of Hope; make yard signs to promote the event; as well as meet others looking to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. All ages are welcome for the kickoff party, as it is family friendly. Refreshments will be served and prize drawings will be part of the evening as well.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer will be hosted at MJC in October and is presented by Sutter Health. It is an American Cancer Society event; for more information visit https://makingstrideswalk.org/sanjoaquinvalley
