Oak Riv Fire Calls

The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.

Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Aug. 22 through Monday, Aug. 28. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.

 

MONDAY, AUG. 28

Battalion 2: Crews completed weekly apparatus checks.

Chief DeHart (STEN) and Captain Crabtree (STEN-T) have been reassigned as part of Strike Team 4200C. They are now at the Happy Camp Complex.

Battalion 5: 10:57 a.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Stanislaus Grass 26, and BC5 responded to a vegetation fire in a vacant lot near Hallman Lane and Marquez Court. Engine 27 arrived with a vegetation fire in a disced field burning up against a block wall. The fire was quickly extinguished without damage to property.

12:22 p.m. – Modesto Engine 28, Engine 29, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at Willms Road and Highway 108. Engine 29 arrived on scene of a two-vehicle accident and had three patients with minor injuries that were transported by ground ambulance to local hospitals.

 

SUNDAY, AUG. 27

Battalion 2: 2:38 p.m. – Responded to a call in Battalion 1 service area. Engine 5, Truck 5 and BC1 responded to a reported fire behind a residence in the 900 block of Oxford Way. The response was upgraded enroute to a working residential structure fire (Engine 1, Engine 3, Engine 21, Engine 19, Engine 26 and BC3) for reports of a residence on fire. Engine 5 and Truck 5 arrived to find a large volume of fire behind several houses in the 900 block of Oxford. A second alarm was requested, and crews began to work on preventing fire extension into three residences immediately threatened by fire. Crews were able to confine and isolated fire extension into the attic space of one residence. Crews remained on scene completing extensive overhaul for several hours. The fire is currently under investigation. BC2 assisted with Battalion Coverage for the second alarm fire.

Several SCBA bottles were delivered to several stations.

Battalion 5: Managed fire station coverage during the second alarm fire.

5:17 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded to Albers and Patterson Road for an injury vehicle accident. Engine 28 arrived and began to check for injuries. Engine 28 handled patient care and canceled the balance.

 

SATURDAY, AUG. 26

Battalion 2: 1:28 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 9 and BC1 responded to motor vehicle accident. Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved and began to investigate for injuries. Two patients with minor injuries were treated on scene.

5:20 p.m. – Engine 26 was dispatched for the report of an unknown type of fire near High and First Street in the City of Riverbank. Enroute due to the amount of smoke in the area the response was upgraded to a vegetation fire response adding Grass 27, Water Tender 27 and BC5. Engine 26 arrived to find a grass fire that had extended into a shop at the City of Riverbank Corporation Yard. The incident was upgraded to a commercial working fire. The fire had established itself inside a six-bay metal shop, with multiple vehicles on fire inside and outside of the building. Crews placed large handlines in place and kept the fire from spreading to other buildings. The fire was under control in about an hour, and crews monitored the fire throughout the night. A total of 63 personnel responded to the call.

Battalion 5: 1:42 p.m. – Engine 29 responded to Knights Ferry Recreation Area for a person with a leg injury. E29 made access to the patient and assessed the injuries. Medic FF from E29 treated the patient while Boat 29 responded to move the patient to another location for transport. Once relocated the patient was transferred to Oak Valley Ambulance and all fire units cleared.

The community of Valley home hosted an event at Fire Station 30 celebrating Chief Jerry Benedix’s 50 years of service and dedication to the community and Valley Home Fire Department. The event included a BBQ, car show and an unveiling of a monument in his memory.

 

FRIDAY, AUG. 25

Battalion 2: E7, E26, E27, BC2, BC5 pre fire plan meeting at American Laminates located in Riverbank.

Battalion 5: 2:26 a.m. – Engine 27, 28 and Battalion 5 to Rodden and Gilbert for a vehicle accident. First arriving firefighters found a single vehicle off the roadway into a tree. The lone occupant was found to have critical injuries. Firefighters treated, removed and packaged the patient while waiting for ambulance. Once the ambulance arrived, the decision was made to ground transport the patient. The patient was transported to a local hospital with one firefighter on board to assist.

7:59 a.m. – Engine 27 to West F Street for a vehicle vs. pedestrian. Firefighters assisted Medics with treating one patient with minor injuries.

11:35 a.m. – Engine 29 and Battalion 5 to Highway 108/120 and Rushing Road in Tuolumne County. Battalion 4414 arrived on scene with one vehicle overturned, a total of six patients and one pin in. Engine 29 was assigned to patient care and extrication. Battalion 5 was assigned to the LZ. Crews had the extrication complete in 25 minutes. Two patients were flown to area hospitals by PHI Med 41 and Calstar 13. Four patients were transported by ground to area hospitals.

Crews completed apparatus and equipment checks, along with station maintenance.

 

THURSDAY, AUG. 24

Members of the fuel reduction committee attended training put on by Cat. Training focused on track loader safety and operations, dozer maintenance, safety and operations.

Battalion 5: E27 assisted the other shifts with detailing Station 30.

Companies trained on SCBA donning and emergency buddy breathing in zero visibility conditions.

12:23 p.m. – Battalion 2, Water Rescue 24 and 28, and Engine 27 responded to a subject who lost his kayak near the Horseshoe Recreation area and was stuck on an island. He was wearing a life jacket and not in distress. Boat 28 launched from the recreation area and quickly brought him to shore. The subject was not injured and was taken back to Knights Ferry to reunite with the other members of his family.

1:43 p.m. – Engine 9, 28, 28 and Battalion 2 to Claribel and Oakdale Waterford Highway for a vehicle accident. Crews arrived on scene to find one motorcycle rider down off the roadway. One patient was treated and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for moderate injuries.

6:15 p.m. – Water Rescue 28, Engine 29 and Battalion 5 to Woodward Reservoir for a person pulled from the water with an altered level of consciousness. Upon arrival, crews found a single patient that was removed from the water and was unconscious. Firefighters worked with Medics to treat the patient and package them for transport. The patient was transported to a local hospital.

 

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 23

Battalion 2: Chief DeHart continues his deployment as a Strike Team Leader working on the Deep Fire. He is assigned with five other Stanislaus County engines. Crews are working hard in rough terrain to complete hose lays and support firing operations.

Battalion 5: 2:30 p.m. – Engine 28 and BC5 responded to an alert 1 at the Oakdale airport. Units arrived on scene and found a single engine aircraft that had landing gear failure after touching down on the runway. The aircraft slid to a stop and the pilot was able to walk away with no injuries. Airport was closed for a few hours while the aircraft was removed.

 

TUESDAY, AUG. 22

The MST Technical Rescue Team trained on tower rescue today. They simulated lowering a patient that was trapped on a communications tower.

Battalion 2: Training was conducted at the station level.

Battalion 5: 3:49 p.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Valley Home Road and 26 Mile Road. Upon arrival there was a vehicle vs. dump truck with two patients inside the vehicle and one patient pinned in. Crews extricated one patient, and both were then transported by ground ambulance to local hospitals. There was a total of one immediate patient and one delayed patient.

4:11 p.m. – Modesto E7, E9, E23, E26, E27, E29, Q22, WT23, Escalon WT 1-1, BC2, BC5, and FIU were dispatched to a residential working structure fire in the 4000 block of Mission Avenue in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene with fire and smoke from the attic of a single-story house. Crews operated in the offensive mode to bring the fire under control. Additionally, SQ11, E28, and WT6 were called to the scene to assist with extinguishing the fire. All occupants were out of the house and accounted for. The cause of the fire was from a malfunctioning BBQ on the back patio of the house.
