The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, April 30 through Monday, May 6. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MAY 6
Battalion 5: 7:02 a.m. – Modesto Engine 28 responded to an EMS call in the 10000 block of 26 Mile Road. Upon arrival Engine 28 found an unresponsive patient in cardiac arrest and immediately began CPR. Advanced lifesaving care was continued for 40 minutes and unfortunately the patient was declared deceased by a local Emergency Room Physician.
Modesto Engine 29 began Engineer’s training with their Firefighter.
Modesto Engine 28 conducted fire hydrant maintenance in their FMA.
SUNDAY, MAY 5
Battalion 2: Stanislaus firefighters trained with Turlock firefighters on auto extrication, getting some great hands-on experience for our newest members.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 trained on Engine company operations.
8:22 a.m. – Water Rescue 28, Water Rescue 29 and BC5 responded to the report of an overturned kayak at Oakdale Rec area. Crews located an abandoned kayak with no victims. Boat 28 launched and removed the kayak from the river and gave it to Army Corps for disposal.
SATURDAY, MAY 4
Battalion 2: Quint 22 and Engine 26 trained on rope systems.
Battalion 5: Engine 28 continued to prepare for the upcoming seven-month MST probationary firefighter testing.
FRIDAY, MAY 3
Battalion 5: 6:29 a.m. – Engine 29 and BC5 responded to a call of CPR in progress in the country off Milton Road. Upon arrival crews found a patient in cardiac arrest. Crews performed lifesaving efforts for over 40 minutes but after contacting the doctor at the hospital the patient was declared deceased on scene.
Engine 27 trained on probationary signoffs including leader line evolutions, ladders and ropes.
8:56 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, Quint 22 and BC5 responded to a potential structure fire on California Avenue. Crews arrived and found that an AC unit on the roof had malfunctioned and caught on fire. The fire was contained to the unit and there was no other damage to the residence. All units were cleared shortly thereafter.
THURSDAY, MAY 2
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily equipment maintenance.
Crews participated in company level training.
4:22 p.m. – Engine 29 was dispatched to a vehicle fire in the 17000 block of Highway 108/120 near the community of Knights Ferry. While enroute, the reporting party indicated the fire was close to a shop and catching a tree on fire. When Engine 29 arrived, they reported a fire with no extension or threat to the structure or wildland. Engine 29 was able to mitigate with no additional resources.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 1
Battalion 2: The new Swiftwater rescue boat has just been finished. We will take delivery and begin the break-in period in a few weeks.
Battalion 5: Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, and Engine 29 conducted Water Rescue Boat Operator Training on the Stanislaus River.
6:42 p.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, Stanislaus Quint 22, and BC5 responded to a potential structure fire at West Avenue and G Street in Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived on scene of a single-story house with light smoke showing from the front door. Engine 28 confirmed that it was a cooking fire that was out and cancelled the responding balance.
TUESDAY, APRIL 30
MST personnel and City of Modesto and Turlock staff attended a retirement celebration honoring Chief Jelinek’s retirement.
Battalion 2: Crews rotated through the second quarter of EMS training at Station 22.
New landscaping is being installed at our Headquarters in Riverbank.
Engine 21 came across two vegetation fires in Station 9’s area when returning from Station 26. Both fires were caused by a trailer that had come loose from its tow vehicle. The fires were about 100 feet apart from each other on the roadside.
Battalion 5: Crews trained with probationary firefighters on ground ladder placement at the RFTC.
Crews completed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
