The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, May 14 through Monday, May 20. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MAY 20
Battalion 2: Crews participated in company level training.
Battalion 5: 1:56 p.m. – Engine 7, Grass 26, Grass 27, Brush 28, Brush 23, Engine 21, Engine 9, Water Tender 21, Water Tender 23, and Battalion 5 were dispatched to a vegetation fire at the 4600 block of Claribel Road. Upon arrival Engine 7 stated they had a vegetation fire that was bumping up against a house and immediately threatened. Crews quickly went into action deploying hose lines attacking the fire. The fire was stopped, and the structure was saved
SUNDAY, MAY 19
Crews rotated through Station 17 for the last day of MCI and triage training provided by Medic 1.
Battalion 2: 5:05 p.m. – Engine 23, Water Rescues 24 and 28 responded for a vehicle in the Tuolumne River near Waterford. With the assistance of A101, the vehicle was located and identified as an abandoned vehicle that had been in the river for many years.
7 p.m. – Engine 23, Water Rescues 24, and 28 responded to a subject yelling for help in the Tuolumne River near the end of South Reinway. E23 provided downstream safety, and both boats were launched. Three adults and one dog were rescued from the river. One of the subjects was not wearing a life jacket. All three were evaluated by Oak Valley Ambulance but refused care.
Battalion 5: 7:48 a.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, Engine 29, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with pin in at Lancaster Road and Highway 108. Reports indicated a vehicle off the roadway on fire with someone still inside. Engine 28 arrived on scene with a solo vehicle down an embankment and on fire. Crews quickly made their way to the vehicle and ensured the vehicle was no longer occupied. Crews made patient contact with the solo occupant of the vehicle that was able to self-extricate and assigned a Paramedic Firefighter to patient care. The patient was carried up the embankment and transported by an ambulance to the Landing Zone location for the air ambulance at the Oakdale Rodeo Grounds. Crews also extinguished the vehicle fire preventing any spread to the vegetation.
SATURDAY, MAY 18
Battalion 2: Battalion drills were conducted at Station 17, focusing on MCI and triage.
Battalion 5: 3:50 p.m. – Modesto Grass 27, Water Tender 27, Brush 28, Grass 29, BC5, along with a High-Level Dispatch from Cal Fire responded to a vegetation fire near Highway 4 and Milton Road. Crews arrived on scene reporting five to seven acres of light flashy fuels on fire with a slow rate of spread south of Highway 4 and west of Milton Road. Crews quickly contained the fire to 5.4 acres and spent the next two hours mopping up.
FRIDAY, MAY 17
Battalion 2: Crews continue to break in the new water rescue boat on the Tuolumne River.
Battalion 5: Fuels crews worked removing mulching head from the dozer and putting the blade on.
6:52 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, and BC5 responded to an injury accident at 108 and Langworth. Engine 27 arrived to find two vehicles that hit head on at a high rate of speed. A total of two patients were transported to local hospitals by Oak Valley ambulance.
6:20 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, and BC5 responded to a vehicle rollover at Patterson and Bentley. Engine 27 arrived to find a total of three patients. All patients were transported by Oak Valley Ambulance.
THURSDAY, MAY 16
Battalion 2: SCFPD celebrated the badge pinning of Captain Corey Wilson Q22C at the Fire District Board meeting.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 28 participated in hands-on training in Salida.
Crews rotated through registration for the ISP at the RFTC.
8:24 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 29, Battalion 5 and Engine 231 from Copperopolis responded to Highway 4 and Milton Road for a vehicle accident. Crews arrived on scene with two vehicles involved and the roadway partially blocked. Two patients were treated and transported for minor injuries.
11:16 a.m. – Water Rescue 28, Water Rescue 29 and Battalion 5 responded to the 14000 block of Orange Blossom Road on the Stanislaus River for a kayaker stuck in a tree. After flipping his kayak, the subject was stuck in a tree and unable to get to shore. Water Rescue 29 was able to find the person and safely remove them to the shore. The kayak was wedged in front of trees and was unable to be safely removed. The subject was uninjured.
4:35 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, and BC5 were dispatched to a subject trapped in a storm drain. Engine 27 arrived to find a delivery driver that stepped on a storm drain and fell into the pipe below. A technical rescue response was requested (Rescue 11, Truck 5, and Truck 1). Crews developed a plan to remove the driver from the drainage pipe. The patient was removed from the drain and transported to the hospital in just over an hour from the dispatch time. A total of 23 Fire Department personnel responded and operated on scene along with Oak Valley Ambulance, Oakdale Police Department and Oakdale Public Works.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 15
Crews rotated through the RFTC for MJC enrollment.
Companies completed weekly apparatus checks on auxiliary apparatus.
Battalion 2: Engine 26 joined with Engine 27 to complete wildland fire training.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 and Engine 26 trained on wildland evolutions including progressive hose lays and handline construction.
3:54 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 26, Engine 27, Water Tender 27, and Quint 22 were dispatched to a potential structure fire. Reports came in of a grass fire spreading toward a building. Crews arrived on scene and found a roadside grass fire and quickly contained it. The fire cause is under investigation.
TUESDAY, MAY 14
The Haz Mat team participated in monthly training in the community of Wesley.
Battalions 1 ,2, 3, 5 and several administrative staff members participated in incident report training at Station 17.
The fuel mitigation team removed vegetation and established fuel breaks in the Tuolumne Regional Recreational Park.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 and Engine 28 trained on salvage tarps at Station 28.
Contractors continue the reroofing of Station 28.
3:10 p.m. – Boat 28, Boat 29, Engine 26 and BC5 responded to a stranded kayaker who was stuck on an island in the river near Honolulu Bar. Boat 29 reached her and took her to the safety of the shore. She was not injured and did not require any medical attention.
