A multi-alarm fire on Wednesday, Aug. 14 saw black smoke curling out of the Chalet Mobile Home Park on East G Street in Oakdale about 7:15 p.m.

Just a few minutes later – 7:18 p.m. – firefighters were dispatched due to a “potential structure fire” at the location, Modesto Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Serpa said. Not long after, updates came flying in: “Two minutes later, we got another report that a trailer was on fire,” Serpa continued.

The mobile home park is off East G, with the homes set close together.

“The first arriving unit was Engine 29,” Serpa said, and upon arrival, many issues faced firefighters.

“Due to the volume of the fire, it called for a second alarm,” Serpa said, bringing more units to the scene. However, the flames engulfing a mobile home on site was not the only issue; in the alleyway behind the fire, powerlines were down, making an already dangerous environment even more so for firefighters and civilians.

The main goal of firefighters on the scene was “to stop the lateral spread of the fire,” Serpa said. With homes on either side of the mobile home already fully involved in flames, it became essential to stop the spread and protect those neighboring units.

A portion of East G Street was blocked off to traffic during the incident.

Chief Serpa said one mobile home fire was destroyed.

There was also significant damage reported to three other structures in the mobile home park but crews were able to limit the fire spread. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians, officials said.

Fire investigators were on scene attempting to determine the cause of the blaze and the Red Cross was called in to assist two adults with temporary housing.

Crews remained on scene for several hours and the initial response included Engine 29, Engine 23, Truck 5 and Battalion 5, with the second alarm bringing Engine 9, Engine 22, Engine 24, Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 2 to the East G Street location.
