Community members in need of seamstress skills or an evening gown for a special occasion need not travel out of the 95361 any longer. Some might find the recent addition of Claudia’s Boutique and Alterations to be exactly what Oakdale was missing and owner/seamstress Claudia Isaac is eager to prove them right.
“I’ve always wanted to open my own shop,” the business owner said of her 107 California Ave. location – situated just behind Walgreens. Isaac opened the shop in late fall and was kept plenty busy through the holiday season.
Boutique hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday.
Drop-ins are welcome; however, the majority of her customers to date have been by appointment.
Isaac brings 30 years of experience to the business including a degree in Fashion and Design, as well as years of experience at a Bridal Boutique in Austria.
“It’s the area I have a lot of experience in,” she said of bridal alterations. “It’s not easy. It’s a very hard job, but I enjoy it.”
The business, though, is not restricted to bridal and evening gown alterations. Isaac has worked on everything from men’s suits to household curtains for clients seeking her expertise.
The ‘boutique’ portion of the California Avenue business is stocked with Hollywood style evening gowns, made to order. As Isaac sorts through the rack, showcasing the gowns, it becomes apparent she is in her element.
“I have a passion for it. I like it,” she said, as she shares the work required to alter a beaded gown.
Isaac herself attends functions requiring such dresses on a regular basis. As a resident of the Central Valley for 17 years, she saw the need for a boutique offering such specialties.
“I don’t like to shop around,” she said of her personal preference. “I like to have one location to go to. Customers have been pleased with the styles, the quality and prices.
“The quality is very nice and European patterns,” Isaac added. “They’re classy, but a fair price at the same time. You don’t need to spend $600 to $800 on a dress you only wear once or twice.”
As for choosing the 95361 as the spot for her new business, Isaac shared that part of the choice was easiest.
“I like Oakdale very much,” she said. “We found this space and everything just worked out.”
