Knights Ferry News 1-15-25
Nastasia Sweet

Did you know Knights Ferry had a winery in the area? In 1868, Abraham Schell purchased three and a half leagues of land with a Spanish grant known as “Rancheria Del Rio Estanislaus”. Three and a half leagues of land is the equivalent of 15,536.5 acres of land of which 80 acres made up the Schell winery known as The Red Mountain Vineyard. Abraham Schell partnered up with a German viticulturist named George Krause for a short time. Mr. Krause passed away and Abraham partnered with his nephew, Herrick Schell, a Civil War veteran. A wine vault was tunneled into solid rock measuring 14 feet wide by 7 feet tall that was similar to the Rhine wineries in Europe. The winery sold wine and brandy out of Albany, New York.
