The Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort announced that it will extend its temporary closure and will reopen the resort to the public when it is safe to do so, a decision driven by ongoing public health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 linked to Jackson Rancheria, casino management believes the decision to remain closed is a necessary step to protect the safety and wellness of guests, employees, and surrounding communities.
“Given what we know about this deadly virus, it’s clear that this is not a time to take risks,” said Crystal Jack, CEO of the Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians. “We are committed to doing our part to slow the spread of this pandemic, and we will reassess the situation in mid-April and reopen when it is safe to do so.”
On March 17, the casino, hotel, restaurants, and RV Park at Jackson Rancheria were closed in accordance with public health recommendations urging people to practice social distancing and avoid gathering in large groups. In addition, concerts, banquets, and other special events at the resort have been canceled through the end of the year.
Suspending operations has had a substantial impact on the resort’s resources, and projections indicate that economic recovery from the closure will take a significant amount of time. As a result, Jackson Rancheria has made the difficult decision to reduce its workforce of 1,175 employees by 275. Workers who lose their jobs will be offered a severance payment.
“Our employee team is the best and most dedicated in the industry, and it pains us deeply that this unanticipated national emergency requires us to reduce our personnel,” Jack said. “We thank our employees for their dedication and we sincerely regret the impacts this action may have on their families.”
Jack said the casino’s remaining employees would be provided wages and benefits at least through April 12. Management will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and the protocols and advisories issued by the Centers for Disease Control and state and local officials.
