Summer is not yet over – as evidenced by the thermometer – even though kids have returned to school.
The hot weather is also making a return, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14 through 11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17.
Affected areas include the Sacramento and Northern San Joaquin Valleys, and the lower elevations of Southwestern Shasta County to Western Colusa County, Northeast Foothills/Sacramento Valley and Motherlode Counties.
High temperatures up to 100 to 108 expected. Overnight low temperatures are predicted to be in the 70s to low 80s.
Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur.
Hottest days will be Tuesday, Aug. 15 and Wednesday, Aug. 16 with widespread Moderate Heat Risk across the Valley and Foothills, and areas of Major Heat Risk in the Valley on Tuesday. Warm overnight temperatures will bring little relief.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
