At 92 years young, Dona Nagel is a retired teacher and author who has written three books during her lifetime.

However, the difference between Nagel and other authors is that she waited longer than most to get started. She wrote her first novel last spring, after entering her early 90’s. To that end, Nagel gives testament to the statement accredited to C.S. Lewis: “You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.”

With support and encouragement from her children and grandchildren, Nagel was convinced to publish her first book, “The Adventures of Charlie.” After its success and requests for more, Nagel wrote two more books, “Charlie at the Zoo” and “Charlie has a Birthday.”

“These books are about a lovable and playful little dog who wants to be just like Nico, his owner. Charlie takes part in adventures to discover what happens when a dog tries to be like his owner,” said Christina Bavaro, a relative of Nagel, in describing the ‘Charlie’ series. In these stories, Nagel has also included all four of her great-grandchildren, who remain an inspiration to her for continuing the series.

This past Saturday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nagel hosted a book signing at I Love Paris in Oakdale, inviting fans to hear about her writing journey and experiences as an author.

Nagel’s books are for sale at I Love Paris in Oakdale, Bookish in Modesto, Hands On in Modesto, and through Amazon.

Nagel continues to create ideas to add to the Charlie series and hopes to inspire readers of all ages. With continued support from her family, Nagel hopes to create more stories and let Charlie guide young readers and her great-grandchildren.

Nagel conveys morals and themes not only through her writing but also through her personal story and journey. She attempts to serve as a beacon of hope, she said, showing everyone that they should set another goal and dream a new dream.

“It’s never too late,” Nagel said.
