Oakdale’s main intersection was closed down early Wednesday morning, June 1 as construction crews struck a gas line while working on the North Third Avenue improvement project.
Oakdale Police on scene reported a 9-1-1 call was received about the broken line and officers were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Barricades were set up at North Second Avenue and F Street as well as Yosemite and F, detouring traffic around the area. Workers in businesses along North Third that had not yet opened at the time of the leak, roughly 7 a.m. Wednesday, were not being allowed in while PG&E crews dealt with the damaged gas line.
The break sent the sour smell of rotten eggs drifting throughout a portion of the downtown area and it was expected to be mid-morning by the time the problem was rectified and the smell dissipated.
A portion of South Third Avenue was also closed to keep motorists from trying to access F Street from that direction.
The roadway was reopened and the scene cleared shortly before 9:30 a.m.
