California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian released a statement regarding the impact on student borrowers following the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to block President Biden’s plan for student debt forgiveness.

“The decision by the Supreme Court is a blow to student borrowers who need help the most. Student debt burden disproportionately impacts minoritized families, creates a drag on the economy, and discourages individuals from obtaining the education and skills necessary to support themselves and participate in American democracy,” Christian noted. “More federal and state financial aid needs to be made available to eligible students to ensure they have access to educational opportunities to realize their dreams without going into severe debt. California’s community colleges stand ready to assist students with grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid.”

Christian said those interested in learning more can visit icangotocollege.com for additional information.
