Looking for a fun way to make a difference, the school community at Sierra View Elementary recently conducted a cereal drive with a twist, concluding the effort with a special event on campus.

The project was set up through the ‘Sunshine Committee’ at the Oakdale elementary school.

“The Sunshine Committee is a committee responsible for building the morale of Sierra View staff and students. We try to promote kindness in and around our school and community,” explained kindergarten teacher Nancy Hill, a Sunshine Committee member. “We were looking for a fun way to help fill the pantry at the Center for Human Services with cereal. We thought promoting a giant domino fall, using boxes of cereal, would excite and motivate our students to collect cereal and in the process, they would have the opportunity to help someone in need.”

Students brought in the donations of all kinds of cereal; the school collected boxes of cereal for two weeks.

“On the morning of November 20, classes hauled their cereal out to the playground,” added Hill.

There, Vice Principal Mrs. DeCoste, along with fifth grade students from the classes of Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Bianchi, and Mrs. Whiting set up the cereal dominoes.

Hundreds of boxes were donated, enough to create a huge display that featured twists and turns as it wound its way around the playground blacktop.

“Teachers were asked to submit the name of the student from their class that donated the most boxes of cereal,” Hill said.

Those names were then entered into a drawing.

“The Vice Principal, Mrs. DeCoste, drew fourth grader Xander Hurlburt’s name and he had the honor of knocking down the first box of cereal to start the domino fall,” Hill said of the successful completion of the domino project. “The whole school joined in the fun to watch the cereal dominoes fall.”

After the boxes fell, representatives of the Center for Human Services were able to assist those at the school in collecting the donations, loading the boxes into vehicles for transport. The cereal will now help stock the shelves at the Center and be distributed to provide a nutritious breakfast for many in need in the community.
