On Monday, Feb. 12, 2024 exactly 100 years after it was founded, the Modesto Garden Club, Inc. will begin a year of celebrations to mark its 100th year. On that date at 10 a.m. the club is holding a Ground Breaking Ceremony to bury a 25-year time capsule at the Centennial Garden located at the Virginia Corridor Trail and West Orangeburg Avenue in Modesto.

The public is invited to attend and lend their support. Speakers include Modesto Garden Club President Nancy Robinson and Modesto Mayor Sue Zwahlen. If you have an item you feel would make an appropriate addition to the capsule, bring it to the Modesto Garden Club Office at 622 14th St., Modesto, between 9 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Past President and Centennial Celebration Chair Dan Yockey has organized a year of memorable events to commemorate the 1924 vision of founder Frederick “Pop” Knorr, a Modesto Junior College professor who was a naturalist, conservationist and early advocate of civic beautification in Modesto. A few of the club’s 2024 events include hosting a Spring Garden Tour in April, Summer Luncheon and Table Viewing in June and is honored to serve as the Grand Marshal of Modesto’s Fourth of July Parade.
